Property Description

Situated on the Royal Military Canal and beside Iden Lock, The Lock Cottage dates back to the Napoleonic era, when it was used as officers’ quarters. The lock itself was completed in 1808 whilst this detached, single-storey holiday cottage was built in 1824. Iden Lock is no longer a working lock; the last barge passed through it in 1909, the receipt for which was signed by Spencer Catt who had been the lock keeper since 1890. He was the great great great grandfather of The Lock Cottage’s current owner. Guests can paddle their canoe from Iden Lock to West Hythe or hire rowing boats at Hythe. Fishing and walking available. Camber Sands 5 miles. Rye, Appledore and shops 3 miles.

Living room with oak floor. Dining room with open fire. Kitchen with butler sink and tiled floor. Two double bedrooms, one with wood-burning stove, one with ornamental fireplace. Single bedroom with ornamental fireplace. Step up to bathroom with shower over corner bath, toilet and tiled floor.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Really loved the property and the fact that it was really on the water but with a fenced in garden. The place was comfortably furnished and I think the pictures on the web-site could be improved as it was much nicer in reality than expected from the site. July 2012.
  2. A fantastic peaceful location. We were in winter which was lovely for the open fire and wood burners in the cottage. The sound of the running water outside the property was lovely and on a summers day would be perfect for a BBQ or picnic. Loved this place! Jan 2012.
  3. High quality cottage. Real fire, glass roof in sitting room, all facilities we needed. Jan 2011.
  4. Clean and comfortable, set beside the canal and river. Large enclosed tidy garden. Cottage well presented with welcome cake, milk and basics. Aug 2010.
  5. Beautiful and quirky cottage, sympathetically and tastefully converted. Well equipped kitchen, good quality attractive furnishings throughout and great location. Lovely garden. All made for an excellent repeat visit. June 2010.
  6. The cottage was gorgeous. The photos did not do justice to the loveliness of the property and the setting. The owners had clearly gone to a lot of travel to make the property both elegant and comfortable. The extra touches such as flowers and milk for the tea just added to an extremely positive impression and we would definitely consider staying here again. May 2010.
  7. Beautifully restored period cottage, very suited to small children - no ornaments in vulnerable places - comfortable and homely but still felt like somewhere really special. April 2010.
  8. Homely atmosphere, tasteful furnishings. March 2010.
  9. Spacious with large, enclosed garden. Interior of property, especially lounge, excellent. March 2010.
  10. The property was in pristine condition, very clean and tidy and it is very nicely decorated throughout. The location is beautiful and it is surrounded by beautiful villages. March 2010.
  11. Open fire was lovely the location was beautiful. Jan 2010.
  12. Tastefully restored, open fire. Nov 2009.
  13. A beautiful character property in a wonderful rural location, yet within an hour’s walking distance of the pretty town of Rye. The cottage is lovingly looked after and a real joy to stay in, being excellently equipped and tastefully furnished. The large garden, the pretty courtyard and the lovely view across the lock out into open fields made for magical sunrises and star-gazing at night. The only difficulty we had was leaving on our last day! Sept 2009.
  14. Very accessible, clean, well provided for in facilities in the cottage. Plenty of room for 5 people. Excellent kitchen facilities. We thought the cottage was wonderfully situated along the disused lock - a very pretty area. The cottage was spotless and everything we needed was there. The idea was to self cater and we were able to do this very well. The people we contacted about it were so friendly and helpful (even providing a wheelchair for my mother who is 92). So all in all we were very pleased with it - our relatives from Australia thought it fantastic and ideally situated for visiting Battle Abbey and Rye. July 2009.
