Property Description

"A truly magical estate to escape to and unwind..."

Nestling peacefully high in the hills above the Taw/Torridge estuaries, the Webbery Manor Estate - a Saxon manor listed in the Domesday Book as being given by the conqueror to Nicholas the Crossbowman - is a haven of rural tranquillity, yet lies within convenient striking distance of the North Devon market towns of Bideford and Barnstaple. In the 30 acres of parkland and woods surrounding the Manor House (rebuilt during the Regency period), grazing sheep compete for space with deer, hare, owls, pheasant, birds of prey and other wildlife. Stunning views of Exmoor and Lundy Island (accessible by ferry from Bideford and Ilfracombe) may be enjoyed from the grounds on clear days. Gardeners will delight in the many specimen trees and rhododendrons, and in the stone and brick walled kitchen gardens from which complimentary seasonal produce is made available to guests. In addition, the gardens at RHS Rosemoor, Marwood and Tapley Park are all within easy driving distance.
Four of the properties (HDDN, HDDO, HDDP and HDDQ) were originally constructed using materials from the estate and all have been refurbished to an exceptionally high standard with careful attention being paid to comfort and detail. Beautifully decorated and furnished with antique and period pieces, they offer solid oak floors, hand-made curtains and wood-burning stoves with fuel available from the estate’s woodland. The owners’ tennis court may be used subject to availability (non-marking footwear must be worn). Dove Cote House is a substantial residence, truly unique with dove cotes set into the front gable of the house. The interior boasts vaulted ceilings, galleried landings and many other interesting features. The main bedroom has a roof terrace with breathtaking westerly views out to Lundy Island - just the place for breakfast or watching the setting sun with a glass of wine on a warm summer’s evening.
A link to the Groom’s Cottage can be opened up to create a six-bedroomed cottage accommodating twelve people. The Groom’s Cottage which adjoins the Dove Cote House has open-plan accommodation on the ground floor with French doors leading to a secluded walled garden. The Linhay, where carts were once kept and the hay stored for the horses which worked the estate in a bygone age, is a two-bedroomed detached cottage with a bright and airy interior which oozes charm. Both bedrooms enjoy westerly views over the Bristol Channel towards Lundy. The Appleloft, which once housed the estate’s cider press is a delightful spacious, two-bedroomed cottage with a gallery and vaulted ceiling, adjoining the Groom’s Cottage.
Chapel Cottage (H81), the fifth property, adjoins the Manor House (occupied by the owners) and is a conversion of what was once the family place of worship, whilst the sixth, The Coach House (HPPR and HPPS), has been reconstructed in the Regency style and has wonderful views towards Exmoor in the distance. It has been divided into two stunning wings, Cutcliffe Chambers and Luppincott Chambers. Each is sited either side of an internal light tower and can be booked separately or, for a larger party, taken together. The Garden Cottage is a spacious retreat for two, and as it adjoins The Coach House it can also be booked as an annexe to this property to create a five bedroom cottage accommodating ten.
Webbery is ideal for family gatherings, celebrating a birthday or anniversary or for those who just want to escape and unwind on holiday in a truly magical place. The locality offers a hugely varied range of walks in woodland, along coastal and esturine trails and for the more energetic, The Tarka Trail is located only a few minutes away and provides extensive (and largely level) cycling with wonderful estuary views. The sea is never far away from Webbery and the long sandy beaches of Instow...

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Our 2nd Visit to the Webbery, a beautiful setting, comfortable, high end accommodation with everything you need. The owners are extremely helpful and their love of the estate is apparent in their cottages. Oct 2012.
  2. We like to have a large cottage even though there are only 2 of us and this was one of the best we have ever rented. The owners were excellent and the produce from the garden a real treat. North Devon is quiet and relaxing although the narrow country lanes are a bit daunting. We enjoyed the holiday and will almost certainly return some time in the future. June 2012.
  3. The friendliest welcome we have ever received. March 2012.
  4. A beautiful property in a lovely setting. We will return! March 2012.
  5. This was a beautifully presented property with very friendly and helpful owners nearby. Although there were a number of properties around us we hardly noticed they were there. The kitchen was extremely well equipped and all fitting were of extremely high standard. The only small detractions were that the beds were rather hard and the chimney didn’t draw very well. Going out of season meant that we weren’t expecting lots of sunshine, although we were pleasantly surprised, it did help to go prepared with film times at the local cinemas in Barnstaple and Ilfracombe for the odd wet day. WiFi acces would have been appreciated by the kids but was not missed by the adults! Oct 2011.
  6. This is a great place with every facility you need and so well managed. Oct 2011.
  7. This has to be one of the best cottage rentals we have stayed in and it more than exceeded our expectations. as other people have mentioned previous, on arrival we were welcomed with home made scones and a bottle of wine with fruit juice and milk, we were made to feel very at home and at ease, Katy and David were lovely and we will definitely be returning to this lovely property. Oct 2011.
  8. Probably the best cottage we’ve ever stayed in. Cleanliness, comfort and fit were excellent. Our hosts were friendly and unobtrusive, a great stay. Sept 2011.
  9. Linhay is well equipped cottage with stylish interior. The surroundings are superb with beautiful park and enclosed gardens. Aug 2011.
  10. Our reception and introduction to the cottage were exemplary. The accommodation itself was brilliant. The only tip for future guests would be to keep bedroom curtains and doors closed on a (hopefully) sunny day as the window on the landing meant that the upper storey got very hot and stuffy. What a caveat !!! July 2011.
  11. The Linhay is part of a lovely collection of properties set on ’The Webbery’ Estate. The owners Kate and Kevin could not have been more welcoming and friendly and allowed us to wander around freely including the wonderful walled gardens. We had our two Hungarian Vizsla dogs with us and they loved the estate, and did we. Would definitely recommend any property on The Webbery, but we loved the Linhay very much, especially the fact that we got the last of the sun in the evening. June 2011.
  12. Lovely property, excellent owners, if you like gardens you must visit RoseMor RHS garden. June 2011.
  13. Well designed barn conversion in beautiful setting. July 2010.
  14. Excellent accommodation - good location. Furnished and equipped to a very high standard. Owners had given alot of consideration to the privacy of guests with the positioning of the terraces etc. July 2010.
  15. Beautiful setting. I’d happily live there permanently. June 2010.
  16. The accommodation was to a very high standard, set in wonderful grounds. The only negative aspect was that the property had wooden floors throughout, which did cause some problems for my elderly mother and dog sliding about. May 2010.
  17. Wonderful property - your photographs did not do it justice! April 2010.
  18. A truly wonderful setting. Accommodation was clean, very well equipped and comfortable. A very warm welcome by the owners. April 2010.
  19. Made excellent use of the space in this character building, high standard of finish, furnishing and equipment all that on top of a wonderful setting. April 2010.
  20. The location, style, facilities were all excellent, especially when you have a dog. Great walks from the front door. Feb 2010.
