Property Description

The Hunting Lodge is an Austrian chalet set in its own grounds in green managed woods and large open spaces, accessed by a rough track, this property provides peace and privacy yet is close to all amenities, and the excellent grocer in Kingussie will deliver. True to its name, The Hunting Lodge offers fishing and rough shooting by arrangement, and is also well placed for accessing all areas of one of the best-served holiday areas in Scotland. Located within the Cairngorm National Park, Kingussie has links with the TV drama series Monarch of the Glen, which was broadcast by the BBC and was set in the area. The Ardverikie Estate, where Monarch of the Glen was filmed, is about 12 miles from Kingussie and was also a location for the movies Mrs Brown and The Missionary. Notable attractions for visitors to the area include The Highland Wildlife Park where Scottish wildlife can be experienced in the setting of the Scottish Highlands; there is a safari section as well as the more usual walk-around area. A variety of animals found in Scotland today can be seen there, as well as those from mountainous regions all over the world. Another tourist attraction found locally are the ruins of the early 18th century Ruthven Barracks which were built on the site of Ruthven Castle near the original site of the village - the flood plain of the River Spey caused the village to be relocated to its present day site. Just 3 miles away is the The Highland Folk Museum, which was the first British mainland open air museum. Visitors can enjoy learning about Highland life going back to the 1700s in a living history environment with the backdrop of a wonderful natural setting where red squirrels can also be observed. Newtonmore is 3 miles away and Aviemore is 12 miles. Shops 3 miles, pub 2 miles.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Excellent property & location. Very private and tranquil. Loads of wildlife (Red squirrel, deer, birds, etc.). Early one morning we saw a herd of deer (10+) come into the pasture next to the house - terrific. Loads of local walks on your doorstep. Basic mountain biking from your door (forest fire roads) more technical further afield. Large private grass area next to cottage for football, golf practice, or whatever you want it for. Super for kids - your own private forest with walk and hide. The house itself has everything you would need and more. Very clean & well kept - hence its previous Gold Award from Country Cottage. Wouldn’t recommend you visit as you may book the week I want next year! (P.S. - it’s our third visit). June 2012.
  2. Superb seclusion and comfort with surrounding woodland and Cairngorm views. Good access to nearby towns and attractions. A really solid timber property. April 2012.
  3. Absolutely lovely. Warm, if not too hot with the wood burner on. Sid the squirrel and woody the woodpecker a joy to say "morning" to! Wish we’d taken our bikes as had to rely on the car to get into the village. Drove to the Glen in Newtonmore which is worth a trip for the view as well as all the local views. The butcher in Kingussie breeds his own lambs and it is delicious, if you want quality. Overall, if you take a wash bag and clothes everything is there for you to enjoy. Feb 2012.
  4. Beautiful property in the most breathtaking location. The photos don’t do the accommodation justice. It’s large but cosy and like a home from home but in a better location. Oct 2011.
  5. Ideal picture postcard location - a hidden spacious cottage in a private wood. First class location, fittings & fixtures, you could not want better. This is underwritten by a recent 4 star gold award. If you like a quality cottage with privacy and space look no further. There is a large grassed area adjacent to the Cottage (ideal for football / games) and table tennis / darts in the double garage for those rainy days. There are walks on your doorstep. There is a patio area downstairs with table/chairs for the alfresco meals and a verandah upstairs if you want a quite read, a glass of wine and a view of the Cairngorms. The only downside is the weather and as long as you cater for that with the right outdoor gear, activities for indoors and contingencies for indoor visits then you’ll love it. If you are into mountain biking there is loads just on your doorstep and more technical rides a short drive away. Sept 2011.
  6. A beautiful cottage in a great environment. May 2011.
  7. The Hunting Lodge is amazing. The location is fantastic tucked away in the woods. The rooms are lovely, very big and warm. There is everything there for a fantastic break and lots of things in the area to do and see. We would love to go again. Oct 2010.
  8. We enjoy the loneliness of the house and being directly in the nature. Walking tracks direct from the house and deer noises in the night. Everything was great. Oct 2010.
  9. A great cottage, close enough to civilisation, but secluded enough to make you think you are in an enchanted wood! Great local walks and mountain biking straight from you front door. What more could you ask for. Cottage layout, fixtures & fitting spot on and the "games room" was ideal for those inevitable rainy days. Sept 2010.
  10. It lived up to expectations and what we saw on the internet. The lodge was very clean with everything we needed. It was furnished very homely and with good taste. Sept 2010.
  11. Simply stunning. Vey comfortable! Aug 2010.
  12. Very clean and spacious and in beautiful secluded surroundings. Aug 2010.
  13. A spacious, well equipped property in beautiful, peaceful surroundings. July 2010.
  14. The web site, while good, doesn’t do this property justice. It really does have the often misused WOW factor as soon as you walk inside. March 2010.
  15. Accommodation was very comfortable and cosy, loved it. very idyllic and didnt want to leave. March 2010.
  16. Was very comfortable, clean & cosy. A brilliant place to get away & relax. Dec 2009.
  17. Fantastic location, very comfortable and cosy lodge, well equipped and caretakers attention to detail very good. Would definitely use again. Oct 2009.
