Property Description

"A collection of fine cottages.. set within the grounds of a stunning Victorian Gothic-revival stately home.."

Dating back to 1703, this large secluded country hall is set in 8 acres of land, enjoying a walled garden, croquet lawn and woodland for exploring. Together with the twelve stone-built cottages, it lies in a location sure to delight each generation of visitors - set in the heart of Northumberland, close to the rolling hills and breathtaking coastline. The grounds around the hall lead straight to public footpaths with wonderful local walks starting at the door.
Set inland midway between Beadnell and Seahouses, it is perfectly located for exploring the magnificent Heritage coastline with lovely coastal walks. Alnwick, with its majestic castle (used in Harry Potter film), cobbled streets filled with inns, restaurants and shops is well worth a visit, whilst the romantic ruins of Dunstanburgh and Warkworth Castle are only a short drive away. Bamburgh (5 miles) is dominated by its fortress castle and has a much-photographed wide sandy beach. Seahouses, a thriving seaside village with a golden beach and little harbour, is a must for tasty fish and chips or kippers. From here a wildlife boat trip can be taken to the Farne Islands to visit the puffins and other seabirds, or visitors can explore Holy Island when the tide is out by driving over the man-made causeway. Golf, fishing and many AONB surround Ellingham. The Hall lies 26 miles from the Borders of Scotland and only 45 miles from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and is easily accessible from the A1. The quiet, picturesque village with friendly pub 600 yards is the ideal retreat in any season. Shop 5 miles.

First floor: Living room with electric ‘living-flame’ effect fire. Two double bedrooms, each with en-suite shower room and toilet, one with two additional single beds (for +2). Twin bedroom. Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Fantastic cottage, very clean and welcoming. Peacocks were a nice touch. June 2012.
  2. A great location and excellent property - very quiet and peaceful and a pleasant pub in the village. Our only (very minor) complaint is that the wardrobes had very few coat hangars! Oct 2011.
  3. Great accommodation for a great price. Comfortable, roomy,in a good location!! Nov 2010.
  4. The Hen House is a spacious, comfortable property, ideal for a large family break (like we have had there twice now). Oct 2010.
  5. The whole property was amazing the quality of the finish was fantastic and the size a welcome change compared to other holiday properties. I/we could very easily move to the property as a full-time home. The tree house right outside the door provided hours of fun for my son in a very safe environment and it was nice to be able to supervise from both inside and outside the property. May 2010.
  6. It was a 5 star. May 2010.
  7. A lot of thought has gone into the finish in all the rooms and the selection of the fittings. May 2010.
  8. Greatly spacious and quality fixtures and fittings. A very ’homely’ property. March 2010.
  9. Very clean & cosy. March 2010.
  10. The size was just right for us. The facilities were well laid out and usable. Clean and tidy on arrival. Warm throughout the stay. Jan 2010.
  11. The property was top notch and we were there in the worst of weather. The staff were fabulous, extremely helpful and everything was great. Jan 2010.
  12. The house was a very good size, all mod cons and up to a very good standard, location fabulous, only minor downside was that the accommodation was not quite finished, door architraves missing, bathroom floor tiles missing, guttering none existant, but this did not ruin the holiday at all. Dec 2009.
  13. The accommodation was spacious enough for the 8 of us staying there for 3 nights, not on top of each other. Bathroom/en suite per bedroom was ideal. The house was clean, tidy and welcoming. Still needs a few finishing touches (kick boards in the kitchen, garage, fire place in living room, directions to the individual house when you get on site, outside lighting/signage), but we would go back or recommend the Hen House should the ocassion arise! Great weekend. Nov 2009.
  14. Very well presented, although quite a few unfinished aspects, as I understand property only recently finished eg. no door to one ensuite, another ensuite door did not lock. Oct 2009.
  15. Fantastic space and quality fittings and furnishings. Oct 2009.
  16. The proximity to Ellingham Hall and the short distance to the coast. Aug 2009.
