Property Description

Situated in the lower part of the tiny hamlet of Thrupp, these two detached properties stand in the grounds of a manor house and lie adjacent to the 18th-century Oxford Canal. Offering wonderfully characterful accommodation for a holiday, they stand opposite one another: The Coach House (Ref NLX) is a spacious and imaginatively converted barn which overlooks open fields, whilst The Dovecote (Ref NLY) is a cosy little romantic hideaway for two.
In its day, the canal was a main artery to British industry, but in modern times, the barges move at a more relaxed pace. Thrupp starred as itself in the TV series Morse in the adaptation of Colin Dextor’s Last Bus to Woodstock. In Thrupp is The Boat public house with its open fire and beamed ceilings. A gentle, short stroll along the Oxford Canal towpath towards the nearby village of Kidlington leads to the Jolly Boatman on the A4260. Both pubs serve a selection of drinks and good food. There are many walks to be enjoyed nearby, either canal-side or through the owner’s managed woodland, along the banks of the River Cherwell, which is abundant with wildlife and birds. A ½-hour walk along the towpath or short drive in the car leads to Kidlington, which, recognised as the ‘largest village in England’, caters for every need - having several supermarkets, post office, chemists, launderette and various pubs and cafés. There is a nearby Park and Ride service into the city of Oxford as well as a regular bus service from the village. The M40 motorway is easily reached, connecting to either London or Birmingham in about 1 hour.
The properties make an ideal holiday base to explore the Cotswolds and Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon. The town of Woodstock, home to Blenheim Palace (birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill) and the village of Bladon (where Churchill is buried) are within 5 miles. Shops 2 miles, pubs ¼ mile.

Compact dining room/breakfast area/kitchen area. Shower room and toilet. First floor: Cosy galleried double bedroom with sitting area and four-poster bed. NB: This property was built as a dovecote in the 17th century and as such, is very small. Although compact, it does create a cosy annexe to The Coach House (Ref NLX) directly opposite.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. An excellent location by the canal. Close proximaty to Oxford and Blenheim Palace. Two fine pubs that both do meals within a short walk from the cottage. March 2012.
  2. Perfect little romantic hide away... Dec 2011.
  3. It’s small, but it says so quite clearly in the brochure/ on the website, so don’t be too surprised. Thought has been given to including a lot in a small space. If you want a base to enjoy the area, it’s really well placed with two good pubs within a short walks, and you can leave the car at the cottage and catch the bus into Oxford - or maybe even walk in by the canal. Oct 2011.
  4. Property is in an excellent location. However, it is very compact. Oct 2011.
  5. Hiring bikes from Oxford city centre and taking the scenic route to Thrupp along the Thames before joining the canal waterway we found the location excellent - quiet, pubs in walking distance, Blenheim Palace 20 mins away, Kidlington for supplies and restaurants - not to mention the walks available from the doorstep for exploring the countryside. No need for a car if you want to have a holiday without; walking, cycling or public transport will work fine. Cottage was well supplied for self catering and was very comfortable. Aug 2011.
  6. It was a lovely cottage, just enough for a romantic weekend. Dec 2010.
  7. Location was perfect for us. We only used the accommodation for a base but it was very well equipped. Nov 2010.
  8. We stayed during a very cold and misty spell but the cottage was beautifully warm; the bed was so comfortable and cosy; the chocolate muffins were a great welcome! We loved the canal walks and the bird life and my husband is currently looking to buy a narrow boat!! The Boat is a lovely pub where we had a great welcome. Nov 2010.
  9. Excellent location. Nov 2010.
  10. The property was cosy and well presented, as it was described, and with most necessities provided. Beautiful surrounding scenery made it even better. Overall an excellent getaway for any couple! Aug 2010.
  11. It was cosy and romantic. Aug 2010.
  12. Located in a fantastic setting with a canal and narrow boats a short walk away, you can easily pass the time by watching the boats and there is a tearoom and a fabulous pub within walking distance. The cottage was small but very cosy and perfect for a romantic break! May 2010.
  13. It fitted the purpose perfectly for us. It was a romantic place in a great location. March 2010.
  14. In a very pretty setting next to the Oxford canal. Two very good pubs close by. Handy for Oxford & Blenheim Palace. March 2010.
  15. It was very nice and out of the way from normal life. Feb 2010.
  16. We liked the property but, although we knew it would be small, still found it too small. Loved the character of the cottage and the decor, also furnished to a high standard, loved the 4 poster bed. Nov 2009.
  17. The property was exactly as described in your brochure. It was situated alongside a ’no through’ road so we slept like logs. That said we were only a short drive away from all the amenities we required. An excellent cottage in a beautiful location. Oct 2009.
  18. Very small as stated but was cosy and great for touring the Cotswolds and Oxford. Oct 2009.
  19. I have been in lots of different cottages in this country and i found The Dovecote was lovely, but just a little bit too small for us. I felt i couldn’t relax in there. If they could find a way to put in a bigger sofa, or two chairs, it would make it much better. Two people couldn’t sit on the sofa together and be comfortable. Saying that i enjoyed my stay and loved the location by the canal. Sept 2009.
  20. What a lovely place to stay. Had breakfast overlooking the canal watching the narrow boats go by.Plenty of choices for walking.Park and ride for Oxford very close and would recommend you use.Four poster bed was extremely comfortable.Very peaceful. June 2009.
