Property Description

Sympathetically converted to form characterful properties, the heavily beamed cottages at Thornden Farm date back to the 16th century and occupy a truly peaceful and secluded setting amidst 1066 countryside. Standing within the grounds of Thornden Farm, with its small flock of sheep, friendly goats, free range chickens and grand peacocks, the cottages enjoys far-reaching views to Beachy Head, the South Downs and the sea. Each cottage boasts an individual seating area in landscaped gardens.
There is a wealth of diverse attractions and activities within the surrounding area. Visit historic Battle, where one may pause for a cream tea and visit the ancient abbey or the fascinating world of Yesteryear, a fun museum of everyday items from days gone by. Hastings is a short drive away offering freshly caught fish from the beaches in the old town, the smugglers cave and many more tourist attractions. Rye, with its cobbled streets, variety of shops and inns such as the famous Mermaid Inn which is known in history as the meeting place for the notorious Hawkhurst smuggling gang, makes a truly wonderful day out. Just a short trip from Ashburnham, one can find expanses of white sand dunes and beaches at Camber, with many other beaches and cliff top walks to be discovered along the entire coast. The Victorian seaside resort of Eastbourne (15 miles), with an indoor swimming-pool, adventure park and new Sovereign Harbour complex, still retains a sense of its opulent past. Royal Tunbridge Wells and the famous Pantiles are 18 miles away. Batemans, the home of Rudyard Kipling, is 5 miles away at Burwash. There are also numerous National Trust and English Heritage sites in the locality.
Activities offered locally include trout fishing (fly only) in Ashburnham, Bewl and Darwell reservoirs. Horse riding, four golf courses plus fantastic cycling and walking. There are many festivals and shows throughout the year, including orchestral nights at Battle Abbey and the castles of Bodium and Hertsmonceaux. Guy Fawkes celebrations in East Sussex are a local tradition, with each area boasting its own Bonfire Society. Within 1½ miles there are two pubs, the ‘Ash Tree Inn’ at Brownbread Street and ‘The Swan Inn’ at Dallington each serve real ales and fine food. Whether it’s a romantic short break or a family holiday that is required, Thornden Cottages offer the perfect setting, as many people testify by returning again, and again, and again. Shop 4 miles.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Comfortable property in a very quiet rural setting. A bit remote from shops and pubs so car was necessary but lanes very quiet in traffic terms. Plenty of places to visit within a short drive and cottage cosy on a cold day. Dog friendly as it has its own little garden. July 2012.
  2. The cottage provided a quiet and well-equipped base for visiting the many attractions in the surrounding area. It was rural but close enough to Battle for easy access to its many pubs and restaurants. May 2012.
  3. Wonderfully located - many activities to enjoy within easy reach. Furnishings adequate but basic - eg no bedside lamps and lighting in living room very dim. Aug 2011.
  4. The cottage is one of four, all the cottages back onto the most beautiful little (shared) garden area. Our cottage was one where you could take dogs as it had an enclosed grass area at the front of the property. The cottages are on a small holding and you are free to walk around to meet the animals. We had the best weather possible during out stay. There was only one footpath we found very near the cottage to walk the dog and the nearest pub to walk to, we thought would take a good 30 mins. We tried 3 local pubs to eat in the evening and all were great. A lovely cottage in a lovely area, the owners were very friendly and welcoming. April 2011.
  5. Set in very nice surroundings. Sept 2010.
  6. The 4 cottages at the farm had been sympathetically renovated in the local style with very nice landscaped gardens. Aug 2010.
  7. Easy to find, very weather proof, strong winds and rain were kept at bay. All the lighting was subdued so that it was impossible to read - even in bed. The twin bedroom had no bedside lights at all. We bought one in a charity shop, and there was very little cooking equipment. No scissors, mixing bowls, oven dishes. but it was only a short break so we managed. Oct 2009.
  8. The property was located in a quiet rural setting and had everything you would need for a holiday and was also very warm. Sept 2009.
  9. We immediately fell in love with the Coach House, it was beautifully renovated, the setting was perfect and the owners couldn’t have been more friendly. July 2008.
  10. A pretty, comfortable and quiet cottage in a beautiful setting. Far reaching views over unspoilt sussex countryside. July 2007.
  11. The accommodation was exactly as it appeared on the website, it is easy to be misled on the net and this time I am very happy that I got exactly (and more) than I expected. I will definitely book a group party from Italy with your company in 2007. Oct 2006.
