Property Description

Irton Hall is a stunning holiday location with impressive history, set in the foothills of the Western fells of the Lake District between Wasdale and Eskdale. Parts of the magnificent hall, such as the Pele Tower, date from the 14th century. The Pele Tower (ref 25366) creates a totally unique holiday venue on four floors featuring spacious rooms with beams, sandstone walls and an original stone spiral staircase from top to bottom of the tower. The third floor family bedroom and en-suite are accessed via this spiral staircase; the other floors have additional standard staircase access, whilst the first floor living room has a leisure area with pool table. Broughton House (ref 24374) forms the west wing of Irton Hall, where spacious elegant rooms, chandeliers and a grand staircase with stained glass windows make this a dream holiday venue. A pool table in the living room and wi-fi access enhance the excellent facilities available. The Clock Tower (ref 24587) is a wonderful original stone detached building behind the main hall with a modern interior, including 4 shower rooms and a spacious family living area with patio doors opening onto a private decked area. Set beside the main hall, Lamplugh (ref 25507) is a delightful, semi-detached holiday cottage with spacious rooms looking out over grounds, having its own private sitting-out area and freedom to roam the nature trails within the woods. Lingard Cottage (ref 26257) is a semi-detached cottage to the side of the main hall and has its own entrance hall and French doors to sitting-out area. Ormondroyd Cottage (ref 26258) is also a semi-detached cottage to the side of the main hall with its own entrance hall and French doors from the living room to a small balcony overlooking open countryside.
Both Oliver Cromwell and Henry VI visited the hall, although it is reputed that Henry VI was refused entry and spent the night under the 1000 year old oak tree in front of the house, known as ‘The King’s Oak’.
Surrounded by 19 acres of natural parkland where children can play to their hearts’ content and guests may wander and explore the natural habitats of abundant wildlife in the grounds. A short drive will bring you to wide sandy beaches, the Eskdale miniature steam railway at Ravenglass and Muncaster Castle and Gardens which also house the unique International Owl Sanctuary. The Langdales are to the east, accessed via the Hard Knott Pass and Wrynose Pass, whilst Wasdale and Wastwater with their amazing views of Great Gable and Scafell Pike are 5 miles away. Ideally situated at the heart of the western Lake District, many lakes are within easy reach such as Ennerdale Water, Crummock Water and Buttermere, whether to stroll along the banks and watch the reflection of the drifting clouds in the Lakes, or expend some energy climbing the rugged hills to admire the stunning views from the top - the choices are endless. The historic port and marina of Whitehaven which hosts the Tall Ships Race every two years is 14 miles, with shops, restaurants, museums and many holiday activities. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Ground floor: Living/dining room with patio doors/kitchen with tiled floor. 4 bedrooms: 3 double, two with en-suite shower room and toilet, one with en-suite shower room and toilet also accessed by 1 bunk. First floor: 1 double bedroom with en-suite shower room and toilet.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Excellent 10-berth self-catering accommodation, in a beautiful and unspoilt location. The complex includes a real-ale bar and soon-to-be-opened B&B suites. Ideal base for serious fell walking (you can see Great Gable and the Sca Fell screes from the balcony), for the more sedate Ravenglass to Dalegarth ride on La’al Ratty, and the sandy beach at Seascale (where the parking is free and from where you can see the Isle of Man on a clear day). Aug 2011.
  2. This is the perfect place for a group holiday. The caretaker was very pleasant. The accommodation was perfect, large dining area and a great decking/bbq area. We will definitely return. Perfect!!! July 2011.
  3. Very spacious cottage. Sleeping ten comfortably. Lots of bathrooms also. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. June 2011.
  4. The Pele Tower has fantastic character, was immaculately clean and attractively presented. We booked the Woodland Tea rooms for a private supper on the day of arrival, which was brilliant. All had a wonderful weekend. May 2011.
  5. Fantastic location and great for groups. Really nice property with lots of character. Could be doing with more oven dishes and wine glasses!! Lots to do nearby and good for families also. All in all a brilliant time. April 2011.
  6. Comfortable, clean and had all you needed close to hand. Dec 2010.
  7. Beautiful setting with wonderful views. Ideal for dogs i.e. ease of walking morning and during dark evenings. Accommodation superb and everything thought about from layout to provision of games for evenings at home. Close proximity to lakes, walks and so many stunning views. Nov 2010.
  8. The Clock Tower was a very interesting property. It was well equipped, plenty of room on the decked area for the family and dog to chill out and enjoy the BBQ and lovely big open spaces in the grounds to enjoy outdoor ball games, also wooded areas to walk the dog. Ample parking for 3 or 4 cars. June 2010.
  9. The enclosed decking was good, as this allowed our dog to roam outside, without worry of her escaping. May 2010.
  10. We chose this property for its location to the western lakes and fells, it is a great location for walkers with good restaurants reasonably close by. April 2010.
  11. The clock tower provided 8 of us with fabulous accommodation for a ’get away’ break. The kitchen had excellent facilities and the standard of decoration and furnishings throughout was brilliant. I cannot recommend it enough. March 2010.
  12. Location and accessibility to pubs made this perfect for us. Dec 2009.
  13. It’s a unique property our visit was in the winter but the log burning stove was a wonderful feature. Dec 2009.
  14. It is a fabulous property, all the rooms are fantastic sizes and modern. it was very clean. The views from the back of the property were fabulous and the grounds are beautiful. Christine the caretaker was extremely friendly and helpful. I would book to go again. Sept 2009.
  15. Clock Tower set in lovely grounds of Irton Hall. The property itself suits large groups of 8-10 plus two babies. Very tastefully furnished with 3 bedrooms off main lounge area and further two off hall and upstairs. Lovely fitted kitchen and decking with barbecue and ample seating.. Sept 2009.
  16. The space for children was fantastic and very safe and the peace and quiet for the adults was great. There are certain things that require attention but they could be to do with the age of the property. Aug 2009.
  17. Very relaxing and peaceful. Great views and nice walks. June 2009.
  18. The most important thing about this property was that it is detached with no disturbances from next door neigbours and the privacy available, especially the rear decking was very useful with nice views. Very private sort of a place. We preferred this than staying at somewhere around busy crowded places like Windermere. The overall state of this property was excellent. Excellent location, we were able to go and visit all the lakes, and managed to view the beauty through journeys to the lakes. I highly recommend this place to any family. I also met the owner Steve and care taker Christine who were very friendly and helpful. We are very grateful for their hospitality. July 2009.
  19. Excellent location for Wastwater and Eskdale. April 2009.
  20. The Clock Tower was very clean and tidy when we arrived and we were made most welcome by Christine, she also called a couple of times during the week to make sure everything was OK. It was very spacious and as there were so many of us it allowed us to have our own privacy if we wanted it. Aug 2009.
