Property Description

‘Impressive and spacious’ are the first words that describe this period seaside villa. With breathtaking views over the River Torridge, Instow beach and across the estuary towards Appledore, The Captain’s House is also owned and managed by the Webbery Estate (refs HPPR, HPPS, H81, HDDP, HDDN, HDDQ, HDDO and HMMN, just 15 minutes away) and is located in the pretty coastal village of Instow, just a short walk from the beach. One of a pair, the holiday house has an enclosed garden and patio area to the rear, which is ideal for eating outdoors. Having been renovated, the property boasts a fitted kitchen and dining room which has stunning views over the estuary. Guests can enjoy lovely views from most of the upstairs bedrooms and there is a small reading area that overlooks the garden. The pretty village of Instow, located between Barnstaple and Bideford has stretches of golden, sandy beaches and dunes, which makes this an ideal place for relaxing family holiday. An ideal spot for most watersports and sea - fishing can be enjoyed here, or alternatively local boat trips are available. For those wishing to sample the local food, plenty of pubs and restaurants can be found in Instow and the speciality is seafood - of course. The famous ‘Tarka Trail’ - just on the doorstep - is perfect for walkers and cyclists and follows the estuary towards Braunton and is a lovely way to experience the delights that this area has to offer. On the opposite side of the estuary is Appledore, a pretty unspoilt village with a wealth of painted fishermen’s cottages, found up narrow winding streets, some of which date back as far as 1335. Famous for its maritime history and arts there is a maritime museum and numerous arts and crafts shops. Just a short drive away, visitors will find a substantial and popular surfing beach and golf courses at famous Westward Ho! Within two miles is Bideford with its historic port and lively market as well as regular boat trips to nearby Lundy Island. The Dartington Crystal factory and RHS gardens at Rosemoor are easily accessible, as is a wealth of National Trust properties including Tapely Park and Hartland Abbey, to name a few. Shops 100 yards.

Ground floor: Spacious dining room with oak floor and well-equipped kitchen with slate floor. Cloakroom with toilet. First floor: Living room with rugs on wooden floor and uninterruped sea and estuary views. Small reading room. Double bedroom. Second floor: Double bedroom with en-suite shower room and toilet. Bunk bedroom. Bathroom with toilet. Steep, narrow stairs to third floor: Two twin bedrooms, each with low sloping ceilings and one with feature round window. Shower room and toilet. 1. A stunning house, beautiful location and a very friendly village. Great local pubs and nice beach. Nov 2012.
  2. This was a beautiful property situated in a lovely area. Thoroughly recommended. June 2012.
  3. The Captain’s house provided plenty room for 8 people to have their own space. The cutlery and crockery were plentiful. Dec 2011.
  4. A wonderful comfortable and spacious house we all had a good time. Oct 2011.
  5. Well equipped house with thoughtful supplies to make us feel welcome when we arrived. Good base to visit the local area. Aug 2011.
  6. Superb location and lovely house to stay in. Plenty of places to visit nearby, perfect beach and super safe cycle path to enjoy. The village of Instow is beautiful with excellent pubs, local hotel and fantastic local shop to make your holiday complete. Aug 2011.
  7. An absolutely fantastic property in a fabulous location. The property is finished to a very high standard and really well equipped. The views from the front rooms are lovely with a wonderful outlook onto the estuary. The location was fantastic - the property has a really well stocked local shop/butcher 100yards away, the beach is a two-minute walk, Tarka cycle trail on the doorstep and several restaurants nearby. I really can’t praise the property highly enough and I definitely intend to rent it again - the only consideration would be for parties with small children or elderly relatives that there are a lot of steps (a town house over four floors). June 2011.
  8. Two families of 10 adults visited and we all had a fabulous time. Plenty of local eateries and things to do. Cricket on the beach was great. Guests must visit Clovelly - what a pretty village. House was very well prepared. We had taken cleaning equipment and loo rolls which weren’t needed. April 2011.
  9. We rent houses to enjoy them, not to just treat them as a base - and this is most beautifully situated for doing just that. 2 tips for those with dogs .. the beach, of course, is excellent for exercising your dog. But try Northam Burrows, about 15 min. drive to Appledore and also the Westleigh Arms (I think its called) in the next village towards Bideford. They have a beautiful garden overlooking the estuary and you can take your dog inside to eat - you I mean, not your dog! April 2011.
  10. We were really pleased when we arrived at the Captain’s house as it so much nicer than the pictures show. We’d recommend The Boathouse restaurant just down the sea front road to eat - excellent food and service. May 2011.
  11. A lovely house to stay in.So many extras in the house. Hand towels and soap in the toilets, plenty of loo paper, washing up materials, 2 bottles of wine in the fridge and home made scones. An excellent mini supermarket near by selling good quality food including meat and a deli counter.Good pubs near by. very central for getting around. May 2011.
  12. We found the property to be clean, well decorated, and fully supplied with everything we needed for a long weekend, even down to a pint of milk, bottle of wine and some lovely home made scones. Feb 2011.
  13. The Captains House was a great choice for a getaway for a few friends. The rooms were well spread out and the house itself is well located near anything you need in Instow. We were given some great tips on places to eat and drink in the area and the home made muffins were very much appreciated! Oct 2010.
  14. Stylish rooms, good sizes and lovely views. Very well equipped. Great location. June 2010.
  15. Wonderful house for a family group - good layout, well equipped. Great location, easy access to local shop and wonderful views and dog walks on our doorstep. May 2010.
  16. There was a large amount of room, the facilities were very good and the location was excellent. April 2010.
  17. Fabulous location, beautifully furnished. April 2010.
  18. Wonderful time had by all. Suburb attention to detail. The homemade apricot scones we’re a winner! I left my coat behind and it was returned with such concerned immediacy. Thank you. April 2009.
  19. Walking distance to excellent pub and restaurants. Easy bus ride/ferry to attractive town of Appledore. House has charm and sympathic furnishing. May 2006.
