Property Description

This spectacular accommodation was constructed in 1821 as the brewing hall of a former brewery supplying around 14 pubs in Freshford, of which only one remains today. The Brewery ceased production in the 1890s and tragically fell into disrepair for the next 60 years. It then had a diverse range of uses in the 20th century from a paper store to an air raid shelter for the local school during WWII. In the 1970s Jeremy Fry, of Fry’s Turkish Delight fame, came to the rescue and converted it into a private home. Princess Margaret was a good friend of Jeremy Fry and visited the brewery regularly, bringing with her a highly visible police presence, as well as tending the gardens – she even left impressions from her high heels on the leather floor! During this time The Vaults was used as a wheelchair factory business established by Jeremy Fry and his good friend Lord Snowdon. It has since been transformed into a unique listed property providing spacious holiday accommodation for up to 4 guests. There is a sleeping area at each end of the huge living space and original features, such as the magnificent stone barrel-vaulted ceiling and natural stone walls have been retained, yet it exudes a modern ambience and is beautifully furnished throughout.
Its glorious architecture, central village location and added luxury of a 5ft four-poster bed make this property one not to be missed. Freshford village lies in the heart of a conservation area in an AONB and is within walking distance of the medieval church and village pub, which hosts events throughout the year. Boasting some fascinating Georgian architecture as well as beautiful canal and riverside walks, Freshford makes a perfect base for your holiday in Somerset. The railway station in the village serves Bradford-on-Avon as well as other towns and villages including the Georgian World Heritage city of Bath just 6 miles away. Bath will keep you busy all day with its grand cathedral, Roman Baths and Pump Rooms, shops and museums; or why not relax and pamper yourself at the Thermae Spa? Golf and horse riding can also be found locally. Village shop ¼ mile.

Spacious living/dining room with vaulted ceiling. Modern fitted kitchen. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. 6 steps up to bedroom area with 5ft four-poster bed. Galleried twin bedroom.

  1. We had a wonderful stay at the brewery vaults. We highly recommend the pub in the village, they do great food and local ales and cider. The village is lovely but if you want to venture into Bath the train station is a short walk away where there are trains every hour and you will be in Bath within 10mins. April 2012.
  2. A stunning place that is truly Unique. Parkings a bit of a challenge but well worth it! Near an amazing pub, bath and longleat. Feb 2012.
  3. This is a fantastic property located in a picturesque village within walking distance of a friendly local pub. A very different building immaculately decorated, very much like living in a Grand Designs house. One of the most impressive properties we have stayed in. Jan 2012.
  4. A very different property, full of character. An amazing conversion. Everything provided. Name plate actually on the building would help confirm you were in the right place! Dec 2011.
  5. The location is perfect for quick and easy travel into Bath while still being able to enjoy the beautiful Freshford countryside and enjoy good food in a local pub! Nov 2011.
  6. Stunning property. Very handy for Bath, train service brilliant. Local services, pub, store are both excellent. Felt very at home. Oct 2011.
  7. The brewery vaults is a wonderful spacious rental in a charming village setting. It is very comfortable and has all the modern conveniences. There is a wonderful little grocery cooperative in the village about a 5-10 minute walk away where you can buy your essentials for your stay. Our host was gracious and helpful, and there is useful information collated in a binder in the place to help you with your stay. Country walks abound and charming pubs are within easy walking distance or short car rides. June 2011.
  8. Very well designed and well equipped. If you are renting a car, you may appreciate the charm of the narrow streets. The better, the smaller a car you are driving. July 2011.
  9. Great house to stay in, really well set up and has everything you need. Great location and the train into Bath (only 1 stop) is a superb service. May 2011.
  10. The Brewery Vaults is a great place to stay. A comfortable and modern apartment has been created from the original old building. Our toddler loved the open space inside and the separate rooms at each end (fantastic enclosed master bed). Only downside was we had to keep lights and volume low once she was in bed due to open nature of accommodation, although having TV in other bedroom was good solution. Freshford itself is a village with some beautiful houses, very friendly with an amazing village shop. We would definitely return. March 2011.
  11. Fantastic unique property, beautifully and imaginatively converted to a very high standard. We loved it, thank you. Feb 2011.
  12. Charming setting, very spacious, with modern finishes showing imagination in the conversion to living accommodation. Dec 2010.
  13. Much more spacious in reality than it looks on the website. Really warm and idyllic location. Dec 2010.
  14. Spacious, nicely laid out. Comfortable beds. Very imaginative conversion from original use. Oct 2010.
  15. A unique, well presented property in an excellent location. Would highly recommend to anyone, we had an excellent time - thanks. June 2010.
  16. The property had the "wow" factor about it as it was superbly renovated (with the exception of the bathroom - though this was perfectly servicable). The four poster bed is fantastic and overall a high quality of accommodation. May 2010.
  17. Very spacious and clean. A beautiful and luxurious holiday let. The owner is very friendly and helpful. April 2010.
  18. The property has been converted to a very high standard. April 2010.
  19. Plenty of space and very individual in a lovely village setting but within easy reach of Bath. March 2010.
  20. Fantastic building, very well equipped kitchen and in a perfect location. Only 10minutes on the train to Bath. Really enjoyed our stay and the owners were lovely. (Great local pub & shop). Feb 2010.
