Location: You will discover a piece of British history at Acton Scott, for it achieved national fame as the setting for BBC2’s hit TV series Victorian Farm, acknowledging the Acton family’s championing of sustainable practices. It has been followed by another Acton Scott-based BBC TV series Escape in Time, new for 2010 and presented by Ben Fogle.
Guests can enjoy a memorable setting and a multitude of activities on this lovingly preserved estate, including the Historic Working Farm - where the land is worked with heavy horses to preserve a way of life before the age of the tractor. This visitor attraction is a firm favourite with families. There’s the handy School House café (open April to October) and lovely guided walks and cycle rides.
The prettiest market towns and traditional country pubs are all close at hand, including Shrewsbury to the north, on the banks of the River Severn; and Ludlow, to the south, in its medieval castle setting. This is a food paradise with Michelin star restaurants and artisan shops galore. The spectacular Stretton Hills and Welsh Marches offer riding, cycling and walking. Among the many nearby sites are Attingham Park, the famous Ironbridge Gorge and its many museums, the castles of Powis and Stokesay and Wroxeter Roman city.
But if you simply cannot tear yourself away from Acton Scott, the finest local produce and home prepared meals can be delivered to your holiday house, with a la carte catering available to pre-book for special occasions.
Henley Farmhouse is one of three holiday houses at Acton Scott. The Shooting Lodge is a finely restored and spacious character property set in its own private grounds, sleeps 8+3, ref RNP. Henley Cottage, an authentic Victorian farm labourer’s cottage, as seen on TV, sleeps 4+1, ref ROO4. All three properties may be rented together or individually, to accommodate the needs of larger parties.
Three miles to the east of Shrewsbury, Rupert Acton is also the custodian of Cronkhill Farmhouse on the National Trust’s Attingham Park Estate. A spacious 17th-century timber framed property with spectacular views towards the River Severn, it sleeps up to 14, see ref RN5.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. We had a fantastic week at Henley Farmhouse. We had chosen carefully. We were celebrating my mother in law’s ’80th birthday and wanted somewhere spacious, comfortable but unpretentious (some large houses give the ’grand country house’ experience), in a good walking area. It more than met our expectations. The highlight was the huge dining table with the invaluable TWO dishwashers and ranges. We are all keen cooks and it was companionable and fun to produce large meals for a big crowd each night. The table tennis barn was an unexpected hit too, with my mother in law (see above) having to take a shower after a game with her 16 year old grandson. The only minor quibble was having to sort out extra to pay for wifi. The last two (much more humdrum) properties we have stayed in did include it as part of the package, and with large groups I would think it inevitable that some would require it for work - as indeed some of our party did. There were also no oven gloves? Don’t know if they had gone missing as apart from that the kitchens were very well stocked. It seemed an unlikely oversight. Oct 2011.
  2. A beautiful traditional farmhouse with the luxury of lots of bathrooms in a very peaceful location, yet near to Ludlow (very good farm market). Very warm & cosy. We were attracted by the idea of being able to all sit around the large square table this worked very well. Oct 2011.
  3. We stayed as a party of 16 adults, plus one infant, ages ranging from 3 months to 90 years, for a long weekend in mid-September to celebrate a family birthday. Downstairs accommodation is spacious, comfortable and relaxed and it was easy to fit everyone into the same room, and the two smaller lounges gave some a bolt hole if needed. Everyone liked the quirky bedrooms, very individual, 6 ensuite, 2 could be allocated bathrooms for sole use, the final 2 really need to share a bathroom, although there is direct access to one of the bedrooms. Lovely south facing patios and grassy area for games. We used a local caterer, Melissa Rees, for one evening meal and cannot recommend her highly enough. The food was delicious, she and her daughter prepared everything, served and cleared away, leaving us with nothing to do but enjoy the evening. Sept 2011.
  4. We held our wedding weekend at Henley Farmhouse with 20 guests staying over 3 nights. I can highly recommend this property to anyone looking to have a family reunion, wedding, great time away in a wonderful location, in a beautiful farmhouse. We will be back! July 2011.
  5. We loved the location, as it was ideal for walking and for visiting the Acton Scott Farm, which all ages enjoyed. The huge stretch of grass outside the house was perfect for family outdoor games, and the table tennis room was a bonus. The layout of the house seemed to suit us perfectly, as each branch of the family took a different staircase (of the three internal staircases) and used the bedrooms at the top of their staircase! The dining table was a bit unwieldy, but we re-arranged it into a sideboard and separate smaller table, to make things a bit cosier. July 2011.
  6. It was a fantastic venue, great facilities, big enough to get a big crowd of us together and celebrate our birthdays, without disturbing other people. Also the freedom to enjoy the outdoor space as well as the beautiful farmhouse. There was enough crockery, pots and pans etc. Overall I think everyone had a wonderful weekend. June 2011.
  7. Great holiday for a family get together. Children realy enjoyed location. Plenty of room to play and safe for them to roam. Children want to go back for christmas. Bedrooms were a great discovery!! although minimal, beds and pillows gave all, the best nights sleep for years. Our "cook" enjoyed the kitchen, which was well equipped to cook for our party of 27. Excellent fridge/freezer to cater for large party. Marked down on f&f as signals to both televisions were poor and high chairs not to clean (bring anitseptic wipes). Do visit antique market in Church Stretton and pick up sausages and bugers from Ludlow Food centre. Housemans bar should not be missed,a different style of eating. The children loved Stoksey Castle and Acton Scott Farm. All in all, a great experience, if you want something a little different. Between us, our party have travelled far and wide, but all wanted to know "how did you find this place!" Great fun......EXCELLENT. May 2011.
  8. The farmhouse was spacious and comfortable and there was plenty of room for nineteen people. The quilts could have been a bit wider to take into account the size of the beds, but having said that the beds were extremely comfortable. I would definitely recommend this property. March 2011.
  9. The house was perfect for a get away with friends and their children. Was a great house that we all fitted into comfortably. Feb 2011.
  10. Very spacious, simply furnished, not too much clutter vulnerable to being knocked over! Dec 2010.
  11. A fantastic venue for a large family gathering. The property has sufficient reception rooms to allow both quiet conversations and larger more vocal groups. Well equipped and with an amazing range of bedroom styles to suit all tastes. Oct 2010.
  12. An exceptionally well-situated, well-maintained property with easy access to many interesting places around. We are considering another family holiday here. A personal comment - it would be good if the floor of the table tennis room could be made more even. Oct 2010.
  13. The house was home from home, spotless and well equipped. Sept 2010.
  14. Overall facilities (eg kitchen, lounge, etc) ie everything available that you could need. Large garden perfect. July 2010.
  15. Lots of space to allow a large party to share the accommodation without feeling crowded. July 2010.
  16. Excellent house. Beautifully decorated to the highest standard. Gardens beautiful and private. June 2010.
  17. Everything about the house was perfect. Everything that 20 people could possibly want was provided in abundance. April 2010.
  18. A lovely property full of character and good kitchen, dining and lounge facilities. So good we have gone back! Feb 2010.
  19. Spacious - plenty of room for our large party. Feb 2010.
  20. The large size, seclusion and privacy of the property. It has huge amounts of character and charm, is well equipped and has a homely feel. Jan 2010.
