Property Description

A charming retreat tucked away in the South Shropshire Hills, a rural idyll made famous by the poems of A.E. Housman’s A Shropshire Lad.

Henley Cottage is a 19th- century former farm labourer’s dwelling, sympathetically restored to reinstate its original condition and located in a picturesque estate landscape which has remained unchanged for two centuries.
This humble property, which sleeps up to five, has taken many a star turn on BBC TV, including hit series Victorian Farm and new for 2010, Escape in Time. Holiday visitors now have the opportunity to enjoy its simple and homely atmosphere and the unique opportunity to escape modern day living. Henley Cottage has been much written about and has been tipped by The Sunday Times’ Top 100 Cool Holiday Cottages (2010).
Accommodation
: The cottage (one of a pair) has three floors and at its heart is the kitchen/parlour, boasting a cast-iron kitchen range. State-of-the-art in 1888, it is in perfect working order. The simple, airy interiors, lime-washed in pleasing natural colours, are floored with oak or original quarry tiles. The atmospheric lighting is provided by oil lamps and candles and there’s a walk in larder for cool food storage.
Narrow original stairs lead to the first floor and one double bedroom with wrought-iron bedstead heated by a small fireplace, steep open tread stairs lead to the top floor and a twin room with wood-burner and sloping ceiling. A fifth person can sleep on the third bedroom/landing. Beds are equipped with comfortable horsehair mattresses, linen sheets and blankets of pure wool.
There is a fireside tin bath for bathing, while the laundry room includes original copper, mangle and dolly tub with fresh water drawn from a pump. Smoothly-cobbled paths edge the vegetable and herb patch for the use of guests, alongside the outside garden and seating area.
For the faint hearted, the single concession to the 21st century is a modern hot water shower and flush loo contained within an outhouse in the private garden.

Location: You will discover a piece of British history at Acton Scott, for it achieved national fame as the setting for BBC2’s hit TV series Victorian Farm, acknowledging the Acton family’s championing of sustainable practices. It has been followed by another Acton Scott-based BBCTV series Escape in Time, new for 2010 and presented by Ben Fogle.
Guests can enjoy a memorable setting and a multitude of activities on this lovingly preserved estate, including the Historic Working Farm - where the land is worked with heavy horses to preserve a way of life before the age of the tractor. This visitor attraction is a firm favourite with families. There is the handy School House café (open April to October) and lovely guided walks and cycle rides.
The prettiest market towns and traditional country pubs are all close at hand. Including Shrewsbury to the north, on the banks of the River Severn; and Ludlow, to the south, in its medieval castle setting. This is a food paradise with Michelin star restaurants and artisan shops galore. The spectacular Stretton Hills and Welsh Marches offer riding, cycling and walking. Among the many nearby sites are Attingham Park, the famous Ironbridge Gorge and its many museums, the castles of Powis and Stokesay and Wroxeter Roman city. But if you simply cannot tear yourself away from Acton Scott, the finest local produce and home prepared meals can be delivered to your holiday cottage.
Henley Cottage is one of three holiday houses at Acton Scott. The Shooting Lodge, sleeping 8 + 3, reference RNP, and Henley Farmhouse, sleeping 20, reference RJJ3, are likewise finely restored character properties, but offer every modern day convenience. All three properties may be rented together or individually, to accommodate the needs of larger parties.
Nearby and three miles to the east of Shrewsbury, Rupert Acton is also the custodian of Cronkhill Farmhouse on the National Trust’s Attingham Park estate. A spacious 17th century timber framed property with spectacular views towards the River Severn, it sleeps up to 14, see ref RN5.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Beautiful cottage in idyllic location. Cottage was very clean and nicely maintained in keeping with its Victorian authenticity. The details state initial fuel is included in the price but the owners were very generous and we had enough to last us three nights heating two rooms with a frost outside and we still had some left over! Only downside was that the modern outside shower was a bit rubbish! All I would say is that if you are looking for a relaxing holiday this is not for you. Fires have to be maintained and there is nowhere "comfy" to sit but if, like we were, you are going for the Victorian experience you will not be disappointed! Would definitely recommend. Sept 2012.
  2. A Great Experience, best enjoyed in summer to enjoy the lovely garden. Sept 2012.
  3. This cottage provided a trip back in time to the Victorian era. Cooking on a range with oil lamps for lighting and no running water. And the wettest April ever! However, this is truly an experience not to be missed and the best holiday I have had in over 30 years!! No TV, no radio, no rushing. Just life and relaxation at a much slower pace. April 2012.
  4. It was a chance to go back in time and live like a Victorian farm worker - very authentic and a reminder of how granny used to live. The fact that the weather was absolutely awful made the roaring coal and log range seem even more cosy. Can’t really score it on the criteria below as it offers such a unique holiday experience. Lovely holiday which will always be fondly remembered. April 2012.
  5. This is a unique experience. It fulfilled a dream for my wife who loved the TV show. You will have a peaceful and relaxing break away from the hurly burly of modern living. April 2012.
  6. A cottage that was home from home and utterly wonderful. A good place to go for a tired and weary mind that needs a rest, but something to occupy the hands. Sitting by the fire, collecting water, relaxing and sleeping were all a delight. I took a friend for added fun and my father joined us later which was utterly magic. In winter the Ludlow Food centre is a must. I have yet to go in season when the local farm shop is open. The cottage could do with a sign as there are plenty of signs saying ’this is not the cottage!’ but we found it in the end! Feb 2012.
  7. A fantastic cottage which quickly became home, in fact non of us wanted to leave 1888 for 2011! it was warm, cosy and allowed us to enjoy each others company whilst helping out with the running of the cottage. We managed to decorate the Christmas tree and cook a 4 course Christmas meal on the cast iron range, all by lamp light. It really was a very special experience to be able to truly live a Victorian life for a few days. Dec 2011.
  8. Henley Cottage was lovely. While the BBC series Victorian Farm made us enthusiastic, the experience itself was even better. Sept 2011.
  9. Staying in Henley Cottage is a totally unique and fantastic experience. I didn’t want to go home! There are many lovely places to visit around Shropshire. I would thoroughly recommend this holiday cottage. July 2011.
  10. Difficult really to comment on the comfort aspect of Henley Cottage due to its unique Victorianess. We had a wonderful weekend of time travel and it was one of the best things we’ve ever done. We played house, pretty much all weekend apart from a trip to Acton Scott farm. We felt so lucky to have this experience. June 2011.
  11. This property offers a unique opportunity to experience living the life of a Victorian farm labourer, without the very real and harsh realities of that actual era. It’s as close as most people will get, and highly recommended as a most rewarding experience. May 2011.
  12. We have been to this cottage before, its the Victorian Farm cottage so no electricity, running water etc we just like the hands on approach and the experience, not for everyone but we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Feb 2011.
  13. We wanted to experience life as it would have been for our Victorian ancestors and this delightful cottage gave us that opportunity - we loved every minute. Nov 2010.
  14. Was just like staying in a museum. It was excellent. Sept 2010.
  15. Just amazing, a unique experience. We managed to cook perfectly well on the coal/wood range. Set in the beautiful South Shropshire landscape. A magical weekend, you must try it! Sept 2010.
  16. The simple but perfectly adequate furnishings added to the experience. Sept 2010.
  17. The period details were excellent. Aug 2010.
  18. An unusual property; tranquil environment; staff helpful on arrival. Plenty of nearby walks. Central position for visiting historic sites and the towns of Ludlow and Shrewsbury. Indoor ’glamping’ !! July 2010.
  19. As described - authentically Victorian! It was great fun cooking on the range and very atmospheric having a bath by lamp light in the old tin bath. June 2010.
  20. Henley Cottage is authentically Victorian with no running water or electricity. Cooking is done on a fabulous range cooker. The property is clean and comfortable and very atmospheric. May 2010.
