Property Description

Heart of Lakeland, with panoramic views
A nature-lovers’ paradise
Wheelchair access in Tarns Cottage

Thompson Ground is a working hill farm in the heart of Lakeland, with panoramic country views. Visitors here will soon find that this wonderful area is filled with a profusion of things to see and pursuits to enjoy, from walking in the beautiful Grizedale Forest and on the Langdales, and going pony trekking, to participating in the water sports and launch trips on nearby Windermere and Coniston Water. However you choose to spend your time, any of these four cosy and comfortable cottages make an ideal holiday base to come back to. The Lake District itself hardly needs any introduction. In addition to the choice natural scenery, amongst some of England’s finest, there are also lots of interesting ‘man-made’ attractions to visit (some more publicised than others). Why not start with the picturesque village of Hawkshead, which is 1/2 mile away. Beatrix Potter’s former home, Hill Top (NT), lies near Sawrey, whilst The Wordsworth Museum in nearby Grasmere, occupies Dove Cottage, which the poet William Wordsworth made his home between 1799 and 1808. There are also many NT properties in the vicinity, from the magnificent Levens Hall to the tiny Old Bridge House at Ambleside. The cottages are attractively furnished and fully equipped, with sealed window units, a storm porch and Tarn Cottage (ref NP57) is specially designed for use by visitors with some degree of physical handicap. Each has their own furnished patio area, and all have access to a front lawn, which is the ideal venue for children and adults to socialise and play. Locally there are plenty of pubs and restaurants, any of which are perfect for spending a relaxing evening in. Stabling for 2 horses is available on request.

All properties: Open fire in living room included. Gas central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. DVD. CD. Electric cooker. Microwave. Washer/dryer. Dishwasher. Payphone (on site). Private patios and furniture. Shared lawned area to front of cottages. Barbecue. Ample parking.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Cosy cottage. Well equipped and comfortable. Milkman calls daily! Lovely quiet location, with 20 minute walk into Hawkshead- along footpaths from door. Centrally situated. July 2012.
  2. Lovely cottage. Very well equipped. Good location. Easy walk to Hawkshead and some lovely surrounding walks. Great ’real’ fire. April 2012.
  3. All these cottages are excellent. Just make sure you take immediate necessities in case they have not been left there - washing up liquid, scouring pad etc. Sept 2011.
  4. The location of this cottage is superb. Wonderful views and setting - and a very attractive footpath to walk to Hawkshead. In fact there are many walks possible from the cottage without using the car. The log store was great for a warming fire. The kitchen equipment all good. All in all this was a great place to stay. The photograph we say unusually didn’t do it justice - it is much nicer! Aug 2011.
  5. A beautifully presented traditional lakeland cottage. Cosy, comfortable and very well equipped. Oct 2010.
  6. The cottage was like how a cottage should be - real open log fire every night. Fantastic views. Weather did not matter whether it was rain, sunshine or snow - just felt so cosy. Oct 2010.
  7. The cottage was welcoming and spotlessly clean. Sept 2010.
  8. Very comfortable. Good facilities. Beautiful views. Sept 2010.
  9. Well equipped cotage in lovely setting - superb view and good local walks. Aug 2010.
  10. Views from Tarns Cottage are second to none. You can see for miles with no other properties in sight. The bedrooms are very spacious, clean and welcoming. July 2010.
  11. Beautiful views, easy access to surrounding walks and Hawkshead village. Apr 2010.
  12. The accommodation was of a high standard and was very cosy with the open fire. Dec 2009.
  13. This cottage had everything, one of the best I’ve stayed in. Oct 2009.
  14. A very welcoming cottage, cosy and warm. Wet room an added bonus. Sept 2009.
  15. The property has great views and there are many walks from the door including Hawkshead village and Tarn Hows. Aug 2009.
  16. A wonderful position for a walking holiday. Cosy, homely accommodation close to lovely Hawkshead and within an easy drive to Coniston and Windermere. A truly relaxing holiday away from the turmoil of a modern busy life! April 2009.
  17. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The weather was very good which I think helped enormously as we had our elderly father with us who cannot walk a great deal, so we relied on daily trips with him. If we had come just to walk I don’t think the weather would have mattered that much. May 2008.
  18. Tarns Cottage is warm, quiet and just secluded enough yet within cross country walking distance of Hawkshead for a drink in the pub. The views from the bedroom and living room windows are inspiring no matter what the weather. Aug 2008.
  19. Fantastic views to wake up to and a lovely setting to explore the Lakes from! July 2008.
  20. Fantastic views, very homely accommodation. June 2008.
