Property Description

"Deep in Tarka the Otter country where the river glides beneath the trees and time stands still..."

Orford Mill lies alongside the River Torridge in a beautiful wooded valley, nestled below the historic town of Torrington. With its air of peace and tranquillity, abundant wildflowers and river life, it became the setting for Henry Williamson’s magical story of Tarka the Otter. Indeed, the mill wheel in which Tarka hid from the hound Deadlock was at Orford Mill. This superb location makes a wonderful holiday base, especially for families, with sandy beaches on the North Devon coast only 10 miles away.
The complex consists of a Grade II listed water mill and manor house, now converted into nine delightful cottages, all equipped to Visit Britain ‘4 Star’ standard. Most overlook the charming ornamental courtyard with its ponds and flowerbeds. Riverside is detached and overlooks the river. All cottages retain character features such as exposed beams and stonework, and each is furnished in an individual style to a very high standard. Guests can enjoy an indoor heated swimming pool, with lovely river views, as well as an all-weather tennis court, games room and fenced outdoor children’s play area. There is an on-site cafe with wi-fi (open 9am-9pm). In addition, fishing rights are available on 200 yards of river (bring own licence, or avail locally at cost). All the waterways are safely fenced.
The countryside around Orford Mill is dotted with sleepy villages nestled among the hills, while extensive woodlands, traversed by many footpaths, offer the chance to experience the area’s natural beauty at close quarters. Adjacent to the grounds are the renowned RHS gardens at Rosemoor, and other local attractions include Dartington Crystal, offering a factory tour and visitor centre. Great Torrington is only a mile away with good shopping and amenities, and there is golf at nearby Hartland. Orford Mill adjoins Torrington Common which extends to 365 acres, incorporating 20 miles of footpaths. The common is a haven for wildlife. The ‘Big Sheep’ and ‘Milky Way’ theme parks are each less than 10 miles away.
The River Torridge runs downstream to the ancient port of Bideford, still with a working quay offering boat trips out to Lundy Island. Just around the corner is the attractive little town of Appledore with its colourful houses and narrow streets. To either side lies Devon’s most spectacular stretch of coastal scenery – a chain of magnificent cliffs and rocky promontories, interspersed here and there by long flat sandy beaches, where the Atlantic breakers roll in to create ideal surfing conditions. There are splendid beaches at Instow and Westward Ho!, the latter bordered by the Royal North Devon Golf Club, and the Northam Nature Reserve. Further west is the supremely picturesque Clovelly, whose narrow, cobbled main street descends at a dizzying gradient to the little harbour below. To the south, the cathedral city of Exeter can be reached via a delightful drive through lush river valleys.
Orford Mill offers very attractive accommodation set in 3 acres of beautiful gardens with streams, waterfalls and the water wheel which is still operational. Excellent as a touring base, it makes a good choice for a holiday whatever the weather. Shop ½ mile.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Very nice property. Owner has a lot of rules which help maintain appearance and condition of property. April 2011.
  2. The property was very well designed to make it possible for 12 adults to stay in it with a lovely open kitchen/diner/living room with space for 12 people at the dining table and 12 seats in the living room - all with a good view of the TV! We stayed the weekend before Christmas and were attending a wedding nearby. It was the weekend when much of the UK came to a standstill with snow and we thought at one point that we wouldn’t get to the train station on our departure day as no taxi company would come to collect us due to the weather conditions. The owners were very helpful, friendly and accommodating - letting us stay until 3pm when a taxi driver arrived and even offering to accommodate us for a further night if we were unable to be collected. Dec 2010.
  3. Good location for exploring and plenty of space in the property for 10 adults and 1 very lively 3 year old! Nov 2010.
  4. Beautiful location, nice cosy feel to the house, excellent facilities and generally a high standard throughout. Aug 2010.
  5. It is extremely pleasant building, a little too compact but pleasant to live in. Aug 2010.
  6. Good size and very clean. Wonderful location. Dec 2009.
  7. The location and the views were stunning. July 2009.
  8. Charming situation, peaceful river walks but close to town. Swimming pool was a bonus. Owners were most welcoming and helpful. A lovely holiday. April 2009.
  9. Had a brilliant holiday and as weather not that brilliant the kids made the most of all the in house amenities. In fact kids wanted to go back to the accommodation early each day. Saw an otter one morning which topped our holiday. Fantastic views etc. Would come again. May 2007.
  10. It was lovely to have the private decking overlooking the river and have dinner. April 2007.
  11. We would highly recommend a stay here, the accommodation and facilities in the cottage we stayed in (Tarka) were second to none. All fixtures an furnishings were finished to a very high standard. It was just before Christmas, so there were no other guests in the other cottages. The Owners were very welcoming and very helpful making our stay very relaxed and catering for any specific requirements we had where possible/reasonable. The tennis courts and pool area were in good condition. The river views and surrounding trees and gardens really were a delight. The original mill boiling is also very picturesque and has a bit of interesting history. The adjoining town / village of Torrington has supermarkets etc. for all your food and drink needs and a few of friendly pubs to enjoy a Sunday lunch. If you have any hesitation of booking here, please don’t its really lovely. Scott, Iona & Friends and the Mackenzie Family. Dec 2007.
