Property Description

Perfectly situated for touring

Drive along unfenced roads surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the northern lakes, until you arrive at these cosy character holiday cottages, on a working sheep and beef farm 2.5 miles from Caldbeck. Renovated from an old barn (Swaledale Cottage (ref W1780) is the middle cottage, Ellerbeck Cottage (ref W1821) is the end cottage), they are nicely decorated and furnished and feature exposed beams, with views over farmland to the fells beyond and walking right from the door. In John Peel country, Caldbeck is a pretty and peaceful village which has, in addition to cafes, craft and antique shops, a goldsmith, clogmaker and bowling green. Situated on the edge of the National Park, it is known locally as ’Back o’ Skiddaw’, a walk over which will bring you into the bustling market town of Keswick. Keswick with its lakes, Bassenthwaite and Derwent Water are a 15-minute drive and full of interesting things to see and do. Enjoy a ride up Derwent Water on the Keswick Launch, use the many walking and cycle paths to explore the breathtaking scenery, experience Keswick Spa, the theatre by the lake and the numerous museums suitable for all the family. The traditional market town of Cockermouth, Wordsworth’s birthplace, is 14 miles and the historic city of Carlisle and the Scottish border is 16 miles. This is an excellent base for exploring the northern Lake District. Shops 2.5 miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

Ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen with beams. First floor: 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 twin. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

Open fire in living room included. NSH, electricity, bed linen and towels included. Cot. Electric cooker. Microwave. Dishwasher. Shared enclosed lawned garden and furniture. Parking (2 cars).

  1. This was a lovely little cottage. We are a couple in our twenties and we really enjoyed staying in the countryside. It was not totally obvious which cottage was our once we arrived but we found it eventually. We loved the fire and it was helpful to find where the logs were stored (in the black bin outside) by looking in the visitor’s book. There was a sheep and a lamb in the garden while we were there which was nice to see. It is based right in the country and it was lovely to get some peace and quiet and to wake up to the sound of the farm animals. The cottage is very cosy and the bed was very comfortable. We met the owner on our first night and she seemed very pleasant. The cottage is a little way from shops and activities but it was a nice drive to visit the waterfall and to walk up the cat bells. A few of the plates and cutlery etc were dirty (but this really depends on who stays here before you). There are some nice pubs to eat at which are a short drive/walk away. Overall we really enjoyed our stay in the cottage and we got it at a discounted price on the site so it was good value for money. We had great weather and we loved the Lake district. We would definitely recommend this property to people who like walking and relaxing. March 2012.
  2. Located literally in the middle of the countryside. Local shop is a couple of miles - easily reached by road but preferably by rambling across muddy fields and alongside a babbling stream. Perfect little get away from it all. Very friendly, easygoing owners situated right next door. Enjoy. Oct 2011.
  3. Nice place to explore the northern lakes from. Theres also good food near by. The owners to the farm were extremely helpful and accommodating. Aug 2010.
  4. Property was very isolated which we enjoyed but for anyone wanting more civilisation this is not the holiday cottage for you but for walkers it’s the ideal location. July 2010.
  5. We were looking for a cottage with character, off the beaten track & Swaledale Cottage fully met that requirement. July 2010.
  6. Excellent position, very clean, superb fully kitted out kitchen. May 2010.
  7. Comfortable, all appliances in working order, squeaky floorboards part of the ambiance. March 2010.
  8. Well equipped in good condition with good facilities for those wanting to get away from everything. Feb 2010.
  9. Spotless and well cared for property. Sept 2009.
  10. This property was very clean and everything was there for you. Sept 2009.
  11. Reasonable amount of room & well furnished & very clean. Aug 2009.
  12. A little away from the busy parts of the lake district but not so far you couldn’t visit them. A lovely area in itself. Local Pub 2 mile walk but worth it. Walked up Skiddaw by the back door, fantastic views, worth the 9 miles. Old Smithy shop Caldbeck had local walks which were easy to follow.. Quiet, Clean easy access and parking. Just where we wanted to be. July 2009.
  13. A very comfortable cottage, good location, friendly owners. March 2008.
  14. Excellent location as off beaten track but within easy reach of main lakes and Keswick. Oct 2007.
  15. The property was very clean and the owner was very helpful. A never ending supply of logs and coal for the open fire was very welcome at the end of a long day walking and site seeing. I would recommend this cottage for a comfortable base to come home to. Oct 2008.
  16. The cottage was everything we could have wanted. It was in a good location for exploring the local area and further afield. In total this is a well kept property and the surrounding countryside is stunning. We will be back. June 2008.
  17. We found the property to be very clean and well equipped. It is in a beautiful location and we would recommend it to anybody. April 2008.
