Summerhill Cottage dates back to the 16th-century and is an idyllic, Lakeland cottage with character features around every corner. Standing detached, the property enjoys beamed ceilings, oak wooden floors, low doorways and delightful features that are dotted throughout. A large inglenook fireplace to the main, spacious living room adds an interesting mix of contemporary design, whilst the doors open out onto a patio area offering stunning views of the surrounding area towards the Lakeland Fells. The cottage is full of charm and atmosphere with cosy rooms and comfortable furnishings, and an original cast-iron range graces the farmhouse-style kitchen, which leads into the entrance/breakfast room. The local area gives access to splendid walks, and one that must be experienced includes wonderful views as Lake Windermere (2 miles) is approached. Alternatively, a 15-minute drive leads into the heart of the bustling towns of both Windermere and Kendal, where many of the local attractions can be enjoyed. Summerhill Cottage makes a superb central base for exploring the Lake District, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts and nature lovers. Shop and pub 1 mile.

Farmhouse-style kitchen with ornamental cast-iron range, butler sink and slate tiled floor. Dining room with oak wooden floor and feature fire surround. Utility. Bathroom with double Jacuzzi bath and toilet. Wooden stairs to first floor: Two double bedrooms; one with four-poster bed. Further double bedroom with 5ft four-poster bed and en-suite shower room with toilet (alternative access to this room via cast-iron spiral staircase from sitting room). Single bedroom with sloping ceiling. Bathroom with slipper bath, separate shower cubicle and toilet. All bedrooms with original oak floor boards. Most rooms beamed and some rooms are accessed by low doorways.

  1. The cottage is beautiful, the photos don’t do it justice. From the moment you open the front door you feel like you’re stepping into the original enchanted cottage. It has features galore and a fabulous view. The restoration is the best I’ve ever seen. The whole setting simply takes your breath away! Even with continuous rain it really didn’t matter because with the open fires & cosy snugs nothing could have spoilt it. Squirrels in the garden, tit birds by the dozen, along with woodpeckers & red kites - it is a haven for wildlife & a pleasure just to sit & enjoy. We will definitely return. July 2012.

  3. We enjoyed a simply superb break at this extraordinary cottage in the Lakes. The house is an absolute gem, and I have yet to find anything to rival it. The old part of the cottage has been kept in fabulous condition - no modern makeovers, allowing a tremendously atmospheric journey into its history. Where else are you going to see a kitchen like this - incredible. The newer part has been built and maintained in keeping with the old. Extraordinary attention to detail has been carried out, and while the house may be very old, the heating is warm and snug. Summerhill Cottage was so wonderful our only problem was leaving it!   4. Much thought and money had been put into the design, build and decoration. It was beautifully kitted out - all Le Creuset stuff in the kitchen, lovely! It would have been easy for a property of this type to be very dusty and shabby by the end of a holiday rental season, but credit to the owners and the cleaners for maintaining an almost spotless home. Previous minor complaints written in the visitor’s book had clearly been addressed, which is always reassuring to see. This is the standard of accommodation we expected, unlike the property on our previous week’s holiday (which was shocking). Aug 2010.

  10. The cottage and setting were an absolute delight. The master bedroom was impressive and the views were wonderful. It was lovely being able to enjoy the main living room during the day with its outlook onto the garden and the cosier, smaller lounge with its log fire in the evening. March 2009.
  11. Summerhill Cottage is fabulous. When I arrived, I thought I had stepped into a period drama! The setting is beautiful and the house has been renovated and furnished with great care and attention to detail. Everything we needed seemed to have been provided. We are all "foodies" and the kitchen is extremely well-equipped, so we were able to enjoy some great meals there. The weather was not brilliant but it was the end of February and the house was very warm and snug. For us, the location was ideal. We all loved it and want to go back. Feb 2009.
