This beautiful country estate offers the perfect ‘home-away-from-home’ in England’s most rural county. Each pretty cottage and private garden is out of sight of any other property. Close to Northumberland’s Heritage coast, these secluded cottages have been renovated throughout to provide cosy interiors with wood-burning stoves - perfect for warm winter breaks.
Farm Cottage boasts its own gin-gang, a circular outbuilding once used as a mule-driven mill. The charming Stable Cottage, draped by a copper beech, was once the coachman’s home. Over the bridge lies Garden Cottage set inside the old walled garden. These three cottages are located in a tranquil pocket of beautiful rolling countryside, under vast skies where the sun rises over beaches and sets onto the moorland of the Cheviots. An ideal country retreat, just 3 miles from sparkling white sandy beaches and close to Northumberland’s magnificent castles. Charlton Hall’s ancient parkland makes for perfect scenic walks. Guests can stroll along the Shippton Burn, which runs under stone bridges, filling the trout lake before meandering to the sea. They can also explore woodland bursting with bluebells and wild flowers in spring and summer; and see nesting buzzards, roe deer, foxes, badgers, hares and weasels – all abundant here due to careful environmental management. A cross country course takes guests who wish to bring their horses through woods and fields. The nearby beaches are also excellent for riding and dog walking.
Additionally, West Lodge is a single-storey cottage nestling behind beautiful stone pillars at the entrance to the estate, screened by mature woodland and handily placed for touring just 100 yards from the single-carriageway A1. Local attractions include Holy Island, the Farne Islands, historic Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnwick Castle and Garden, the Heritage coastline and castles. Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Edinburgh are just 1 hour by train.
Guests arriving by air met at Newcastle Airport (40 minutes by road) by arrangement. Shops 6 miles.

Twin bedroom with 6ft zip & link beds, ornamental cast iron fireplace and French windows to secluded garden. First floor: Double bedroom with 6ft bed. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

  4. This is a lovely cottage to stay in. Bedrooms are large but the lounge and kitchen are basic size but fine for the amount of people who will be staying here. The kitchen is well stocked. There is also an outside shed which has a washer/dryer in and freezer. There’s a drying rack too and iron with ironing board, an excellent space for keeping wellies etc. The garden is enclosed but wouldn’t be any good for a dog which jumps or is determined to get out, as the gate area is just flimsy fencing. You’re surrounded by trees, so it’s very secluded and also that means that there’s always logs for the fire - glorious! The games room is right next door so wonderful for my daughter to have a few nights of pool, table tennis, darts or air football. You’re able to walk around the grounds which are glorious with paths, horses on the way, even access to walks with deers and otters. There is also a small lake which we enjoyed a couple of times having a little row in the boat there (safety jackets are in the games room if you have a young child). There’s a Sainsbury’s and a Morrisons in Alnwick which is only about 10 minutes away. Barter’s book shop sells second hand books but I can almost guarantee that you won’t have been in many/if any a book shop like this before-dog friendly and a lovely atmosphere with a cafe too. Low Newton beach is the closest and it’s long sandy beaches make for a lovely walk, finished off with a snack from The Ship pub at the start of the beach. We had a meal there one night too - it’s to be recommended for lovely food and cosy atmosphere. We had never been to Northumberland before but this cottage and grounds, the friendly people and gorgeous long beaches have tempted us to want to go again. Oct 2011.
  5. The cottage is clean, comfortable & well equipped although the living room is quite small. Very big, comfy beds! The cottage is surrounded by trees & the garden could do with a make-over but is OK. There is a warm welcome on arrival & owner helpful but discreet. A good base for exploring the area. I think more photos on the website would be a good idea especially the interior. Also we may have booked the gatehouse cottage in preference if we there had been photos of it’s position - ie that it’s not right on the main road,has an open aspect & big garden. May 2011.
  6. We loved Stable Cottage’s secluded location in a beautiful country estate. It felt like entering a different world as we drove through the gates - we saw deer, hares, rabbits & all sorts of bird life hopping across the drive. The cottage itself is very pretty and furnished to a high standard. The bedrooms and bathroom are elegant and spacious, though the living room and kitchen would be small for a party of 4 adults. The owner was very friendly and helpful. We used the "Nina’s nibbles" service- the prices were similar to restaurant prices but well worth it as the food was absolutely delicious and locally sourced. We chose the cottage partly for being dog friendly - we would recommend the "Happy Hounds" doggy daycare service in Rennington if you want to visit Alnwick, Bamburgh, Lindisfarne etc. May 2011.

  13. The beds may easily be the most comfortable in UK!! CH and wood fire a real plus out of season... you will never be cold. Enclosed garden a plus for dog owners and those with small children alike. Owner extremely helpful. Cottage ideally suited for coastal and inland trips. We have just had our 3rd visit and hope to return soon. March 2010.
  14. Overall the accommodation was excellent. The cottage was picture postcard perfect, although close to the main house. However, the owner was very discreet and we only met him on arrival. The bedrooms and bathroom were really good - excellent. Only criticism was the living room which, although was nice with a wood burning stove, it was small. The room tried to accommodate a round table and 4 chairs which we had to pull in and out to use and it imposed into the room. The kitchen was adequate but it was difficult loading the dishwasher as the kitchen was so narrow - but not a major problem and still better to have one than none! Oct 2009.

  20. Delightful location. Fabulous beaches and coastal walks within easy reach. Locally there are lots of tracks going through beautiful areas. The dog loved it! So did we! The owner’s daughter is a great cook and can provide lovely meals which were greatly appreciated after long day tiring ourselves. June 2009.
