Property Description

This magnificent south-facing Grade II* listed home dates back to the early 17th century and is full of fabulous original features including a magnificent oak-panelled dining room and hand-carved 17th-century fireplace. Most recently home to an independent girls school, this the principal wing housed the headmistress’ study and staffrooms. It sits in nearly 2 acres of beautiful gardens bordering a 9-hole golf course, gym, tennis courts and additional communal gardens and woodland walks. A little path through the garden leads to Hunmanby, a thriving village with several pubs, restaurants, a bakery, deli and supermarket.
The house itself is an extraordinary trip back in time – the grand hallway arches lead to a stunning 30ft drawing room with an ornate wood-burning hearth and a baby grand piano, perfect for celebrating that special family occasion. All reception rooms, including the grand formal dining room and the family sitting room look out over the south-facing gardens. The bedrooms have further surprises with their dramatic ceiling murals and fabulous sea views and the master suite with its separate dressing room and unexpected snug and roof terrace designed by an 18th-century sea captain to represent a ship’s stern will take one’s breath away.
Cricket or croquet can be enjoyed on the lawn as well as golf, tennis or freshwater fishing at the village lake (for a small fee). Numerous beaches nearby include Hunmanby Gap (2 miles), Filey and Reighton. Scarborough
(9 miles) boasts two beautiful sandy beaches, several inns and theatre with plays by Alan Ayckborn. Inland are the NY Moors, an AONB, with paths to many quaint little villages. Also a ‘must’ are Whitby (23 miles), the Esk Valley Railway, Staithe’s Runswick Bay and Robin Hoods Bay. A more sophisticated day can be enjoyed at the walled city of York. South Wing at Hunmanby is the perfect base whatever your holiday needs. Shops

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Absolutely stunning property with massive rooms, several wood-panelled. A real feeling of palatial living. A little further from the actual North Yorksire Moors than we would have preferred, but worth putting up with this just to experience the accommodation. Oct 2011.
  2. This property was perfect for a big family celebration. Adults children and babies were all catered for. We visited Filey and Burton Agnes Hall. The children are asking to go back to Hunmanby Hall already! Oct 2011.
  3. Plenty of space for everyone, wonderful garden and view of golf course (great to be ’home’ at end of round!). Very comfortable beds and ample bathrooms. Enjoyed by everyone in our party from 2yrs to 64 yrs! Very helpful caretaker on site. July 2011.
  4. South Wing was all that it purported to be. May 2010.
  5. Fantastic. It was the perfect place to hold my fathers 60th Birthday party!!! March 2010.
  6. We booked it for a family celebration and it was perfect for that, lots of room with everything you needed. Jan 2010.
  7. Very enjoyable break for our group of 10 adults, the accommodation was great and suited our needs. May 2009.
  8. Hunmanby Hall is incredible. An impressive building that is beautifully appointed and extremely well equipped. A perfect location for a celebration (ample cooking facilities and huge amounts of space) or a big family and friends get away. The Bedrooms are enormous and have lovely views over the grounds. Believe me when i say that the pictures DO NOT do it justice. We were all amazed when we arrived. All in all we had a wonderful stay. It was toasty warm despite the -5 weather outside, plenty of hot water all through the day and the log burner was such a treat. Dinner in the beautiful oak paneled dining room was an occasion to remember. Only a 2 mile walk to a lovely sandy beach. The owners were lovely, offering excellent advice about local activities and eateries and did their best to make sure we were comfortable. I cannot recommend the place/experience highly enough. We will definitely be visiting again. Jan 2009.
  9. Hunmanby Hall South Wing was an excellent property with beautiful grounds, local shops & pubs are within a 5 minute walk and the pubs serve excellent food. with 12 people in this property you really didn’t notice as the house is so big you are not on top of each other, we had a brilliant weekend with everything you need. I thought the arrival package which was left for us was a really lovely touch, eggs, bacon, bread, butter, white & red wine and so unexpected. May 2009.
  10. The property was spectacular with easy access to the village. Very easy to find and very well equipped. A thoroughly wonderful break was had by everyone in the party. Nov 2008.
  11. The house was amazing. Sept 2008.
