Property Description

This wonderful ‘chocolate-box’ thatched cottage dates from 1660 and is set quietly in CPRE’s Best Kept Village in Wiltshire 2008 (small village category), a short stroll from a 13th-century church of
St Laurence. Adjoining the owners’ property, it is traditionally decorated and styled with beams and traditional features which create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. A few miles away is Bowood House with 2000-acre gardens and children’s playground. NT places nearby include Avebury Stone Circle and Avebury Manor (subject of The Manor Reborn), and Lacock (used in the Harry Potter films and award-winning TV series Cranford). Not far from the stunning Marlborough Downs. Bath, Salisbury, Longleat, the beautiful Cotswolds and village of Castle Combe (used as a location for the film War Horse) are less than an hour’s drive. There are excellent regular bus services nearby. Shop 3 miles, pub (with wi-fi) 300 yards.

Living/dining room. Modern kitchen. Bathroom, over-bath shower, toilet. Narrow steep stairs to first floor: Double and twin bedrooms with low sloping ceiling, low doorway. Beamed throughout.

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. À lové l’y cottage chère. We havé à merry Chrismas. Dec 2012.
  2. A cosy cottage in a quiet village. Well fitted out and well maintained. If a quiet place is required, this is just what the doctor ordered. Sept 2012.
  3. Val and Geoff were the nicest hosts we had the pleasure of meeting on our trip to the UK. Although we had to cut our visit short due to a death in the family, they were most considerate in helping us all during our stay, A dream cottage from another place and time, we will never forget it. David Smith. June 2012.
  4. Small Cottage is an excellent old and charming residence in a quiet village just off the main Wootton Bassett - Calne road. The cottage was extremely comfortable, considering its age and was sufficiently modernised ( e.g. heating and bathing) so that all facilities were available; even a shoe-cleaning kit. May 2011.
  5. Beautiful cosy cottage in a fantastic location for touring Wiltshire. The owners were charming and made us very welcome. Pub at the end of the road was great and food very good. April 2011.
  6. There’s so much to see and do in this area of Wilts. From Stonehange to Stourhead gardens which were both amazing in their own way; Lacock and the Abbey ( no sign of Mr.Darcy though!!);The steam museum in Swindon (Every boy’s dream);Wells Cathedral which was so beautiful:Bowood gardens with its lovely house and grounds including the children’s playarea with a pirates galleon and huge climbing frames:Malmesbury and the stunning Abbey House gardens (plus a nearly naked gardener); Westonbirt arboreteum and lots of pretty villages. We didn’t manage everything on our list. Val and Geoff are a very welcoming and friendly couple. We felt we had known them for years. Small cottage is small, tall peple might end up with lots of bumps on their head but Val has tried to prevent this happening by putting up head protection where she felt people might come unstuck. We had a really fantastic holiday. Thank you. April 2011.
