Property Description

This charming, 18th-century holiday cottage, the middle of three, is set in a peaceful hamlet within an AONB and has a pretty, small, forecourt garden and a larger lawned garden. There are lovely views surrounding the cottage and superb walks from the doorstep, with easy access to stunning landscapes of scars, moors, the Pennine Way and Cow Green Reservoir. The Teesdale poet once lived next door. Nearby are the picturesque Low Force (canoeing by permit), Bowlees Visitor Centre and the dramatic High Force (England’s highest waterfall). Within easy reach are Barnard Castle, Bowes Museum and Raby Castle. Beamish Open Air Museum, Durham, York and the Lakes provide excellent days out. Upper Teesdale is beautifully wild and noted for its flora (gentians, hay meadows) and its breeding birds. Middleton-in-Teesdale, 3 miles with tea rooms, inns and small shops. Pub ¼mile.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Lots of fantasic walks on your doorstep a real get away from it all location. The cottage was cosy and comfortable and the added bonus was a good pub with brilliant food 2 minutes down the road. Oct 2012.
  2. A really relaxing week with plenty of scenic walks right from the doorstep. The ideal place or ’getting away from it all’ in a wonderful countryside setting. May 2012.
  3. Excellent walks from the doorstep. March 2012.
  4. Biggest tip is that the pub down the road has free wi-fi and the landlord & lady are extremely pleasant & helpful. Overall cannot fault the property or location if you want to get out of the way for a while. Feb 2012.
  5. Very, very countryside. Exactly what we were looking for. A very cosy house. Excellent hiking spots outside. Beautiful. Jan 2012.
  6. This is a beautiful cottage in a beautiful location. Surrounded by countryside but not far from the local village and an hour from Durham. Pub literally just down the road, serving very cheap but gorgeous food (and some great ale and cider too!) The cottage was very homey and cosy and included everything you needed and more, including a fantastic information booklet on the cottage and surrounding areas. Definitely worth the money and the electricity was very reasonable for our stay. Recommend for a couples retreat but also great for families. Dec 2011.
  7. Excellent position for walking. Homely feel, with very comfortable furniture. Sept 2011.
  8. The property is set in an excellent location. Remote but not too far away from the nearest town. It is a great base for exploring the local areas. The information pack that comes with the property was very useful to us and so were the "things to do" guides that were there. We found the cottage very clean, with everything we needed for a great week away. There are also great pubs nearby. Especially The Crown at Mickleton. July 2011.
  9. Very quiet, nice neighbors, good facilities, excellent walking from the doorstep. Aug 2010.
  10. Very quiet rural location with beautiful scenery out of the windows. June 2010.
  11. Homely - very well stocked - all aspects taken into consideration, plain guide and lots of tourist info to help with the journey. May 2010.
  12. Perfect location to get away from it all. You could please yourself how little or how much you wanted to do, I would consider booking property again. March 2010.
  13. Deceptively spacious with good sized bedrooms and a well equipped kitchen. Very characterful. March 2010.
  14. Charming cosy little cottage, with lovely fireplace and very comfortable sofas. Dec 2009.
  15. Ideally positioned for walking. Extremely friendly owner and neighbours and a great pub down the road. Oct 2009.
  16. We have now been to the same cottage 5 times so we must like it. Aug 2006.
