Property Description

Imaginatively converted by a well-known Suffolk furniture maker, this Grade II listed church provides unique holiday accommodation. Superb views of the hamlet and the surrounding open countryside are to be feasted upon from the bell tower. A galleried library, together with the mullioned and stained glass windows and vaulted ceilings also add to the unusual aspects of this property. Rishangles itself is a quiet rural hamlet set in mid-Suffolk and close to the popular villages of Debenham and Eye, which are paradises for antique hunters. Densely inhabited during the Norman and Saxon times, this now tranquil rural area is scattered with relics of this bygone era. Eye itself houses the ruins of a Norman castle, the stones of which were recycled to form a folly during the 19th century, while its fine Grade II listed church is of particular historical and architectural interest. Visit also the abbey ruins at Bury St Edmunds and Thetford, and the fascinating reconstruction of an Anglo-Saxon farming settlement in West Stow. Local produce can be purchased at the bustling Friday market in nearby Diss. Walking along the Peddars and Angles Way, or along the coast (accessible in around half an hour), where the Suffolk Coast Path winds through the coastal towns of Walberswick, Dunwich and Aldeburgh, taking in many nature reserves en route. Shop 2 miles.

Four steps from hall, or three stone steps (no handrail) from living room to large farmhouse-style kitchen/dining room with Aga, wood-burning stove in feature fireplace, mullioned windows and wooden floor. Bathroom with shower cubicle and toilet. Two steps to utility in cellar. First floor: Double bedroom with 6ft 6in feature wooden bed and stained glass windows. Further double bedroom with 6ft 6in feature bed, additional 6ft 6in feature bed (for +2) and en-suite bathroom with separate toilet. 1. The Old Church is spectacular and we really enjoyed our stay there. It has so much character and is beautifully presented throughout. Feb 2011.
  2. An amazing conversion of a historic church. Nov 2010.

  5. The property was exceptional. A unique refurbishment of an extremely old property. full of character and history. Jan 2010.
  6. Beautifully quiet and quirky property for a "away from it all" weekend . If you are not afraid of heights the view from the bell-tower is stunning. For a property that caters for so many the size of the aga was exceedingly small. Also the sky box did not have a viewing card. If you need to bring your own it should say so in the literature . Nov 2009.
  7. This lovely old converted church was beautifully warm when we arrived in October, the rooms were clean and accommodating, it was well stocked with all the necessary kitchen and fire making equipment and generally welcoming and homely for such a large and beautiful place to stay. Oct 2009.
  8. Really interesting and unusual. Plenty of things for the children to do. Trampoline, badminton, swings, crockey etc. Good facilities for cooking. Sept 2009.
  9. Rishangles church is beautiful on the pictures but doesn’t come close to the wonderful experience once you’re there. The place is peaceful and full of magic. A real retreat. March 2009.
