Property Description

This charming, detached 16th-century cottage is steeped in character, boasting stunning beamwork, huge inglenooks with open fires, part wood/part flagstone floor and Victorian-style bathroom. Overlooking open countryside to the rear, Pound Cottage has its own large, well screened garden and terrace - ideal for barbecues - as well as an enclosed kitchen garden. Situated on the edge of the picturesque village of Kirdford, it is less than five minutes’ walk to the popular pubs, serving good food. The property has nearby access to an extensive network of footpaths, leading to this unspoilt part of the low weald, a haven for birds and wildlife.
The quaint town of Petworth is 4 miles away, with its plentiful antique shops, beautiful stately home and Capability Brown park, where live music concerts and outdoor theatre can be enjoyed during the summer months. The charming small town of Midhurst, famous for Polo at Cowdray Park is also a short drive, as are Billingshurst, Haslemere and Guildford. Goodwood, with its motor and horse racing, Fontwell races, Leonardslee, West Dean Gardens, Parham House, The Weald and Downbland open air museum and the South Downs are all within easy driving distance. Chichester has an ancient cathedral, tea rooms, extensive shopping, festival theatre and harbour tours, or alternatively Arundel also has a castle and Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust. The Witterings and other beaches are half an hour’s drive, and numerous golf courses are within easy reach. Shops 4 miles, pub ¼ mile.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Pound Cottage was the perfect location for our family to stay at for the occasion of a family wedding in the village. It is a gorgeous, comfortable and spacious cottage with bags of character in beautiful countryside. The village does not have street lights, although the cottage had conveniently provided torches which were useful for walking out at night. We did however, arrive in the evening and it was difficult to spot the entrance to the cottage in the dark. This is the perfect spot for a large family get together in lovely surroundings. Nov 2012.
  2. Wonderful, would definitely recommend it. March 2011.
  3. This place is just brilliant, plenty of room, comfortable, warm and cosy and the Aga is a dream. The kitchen is a typical farmhouse kitchen with a long table that you can all sit around and chat for hours, whilst the sitting room is really comfy. March 2012.
  4. It was interesting to have the opportunity to stay in a character property and we particularly enjoyed the open fire. Feb 2011.
  5. It was even better than it looked in the pictures. It was clean, and very comfortable. Nov 2010.
  6. Very comfortable, a lovely setting, and ideal for us as a group of friends, with enough room for everyone. Oct 2010.
  7. Really attractive, old character cottage in a small village. Very clean with comfortable beds and a huge bath. Perfect spot for a refreshing break away. Oct 2010.
  8. This property was well above and beyond our expectations! Everyone loved the vibe and the homeliness and how cute it was. On arrival we literally jumped up and down giggling (including my 60 year old mum) at how perfect it was was our group. We will definitely be using this property again several times! March 2010.
  9. Good size. Very Tasteful. Nov 2009.
  10. The standard of the accommodation is excellent - very comfortable; very good linen (although we were missing a couple of towels, and now that there is an extra fridge, the only major problem that we had last year (not enough fridge space for 8–9 people’s chilled food and wine!) has been overcome. Well done to the owners for acting on feedback. Oct 2009.
  11. The property came up to expectations: it was comfortable, well furnished and homely. There were just two minor ’inadequacies’. For a party of nine people there was only one tea towel and the supply of loo paper was paltry. Sept 2009.
  12. Beautiful heritage cottage in one of the most beautiful countrysides England has to offer. Aug 2009.
  13. Quiet location, quality property, well equipped.. it would have been interesting to have some history for such an old property. Aug 2009.
  14. Village of Kirdford is charming - peaceful and quiet and offering several scenic footpaths for country walks. Central West Sussex location for touring East and West Sussex. Low door frames might not be suitable for all parties, though an appealing feature for those who enjoy an authentic cottage experience! Do stock up on provisions prior to arrival, sadly no village store. For local produce, baked goods and more, Burfield’s Country Market in nearby Billingshurst makes for a pleasant alternative to supermarket shopping. June 2009.
  15. Pound Cottage was everything a country home from home should be, complete with Aga stove, flagstone floor, a kitchen table for 10, luxurious claw-tub bath, secluded setting in a lush, green garden, meandering walks down country lanes. Beams and tiny door frames made for an authentic English cottage experience! June 2009.
  16. We didn’t get the greatest of weather - booking in December, sunshine wasn’t exactly expected! - but we had a great time nonetheless. It is a beautiful cottage, with more than enough space, fantastic fireplace and kitchen and was warm and cosy on arrival. The aga helped make possibly the best roast ever! I will definitely recommend this cottage to anyone and consider hiring it again, this time in warmer weather to make use of the outdoor space. Locals and pub staff super friendly as well... highly recommend the pub quiz as well. Dec 2008.
  17. We had a throughly enjoyable time. The accommodation was perfect for our party and being able to use the Aga was an added bonus. The weather was not great but we still went for walk in the rain and took in the beautiful scenery and village - the Stag pub where we had lunch were very helpful in accommodating our large party and the meal was lovely, highly recommended. The following day we had beautiful weather and it was lovely to take advantage of the garden. Next time we would come back in the summer and take full advantage of the BBQ and garden area!!! Would definitely go back - thank you. Sept 2008.
  18. Beautiful cottage and part of the country to spend Christmas, loved using the AGA. Bedrooms where of a good size, bigger than expected. June 2008.
  19. A wonderful cottage. The owners were helpful and friendly but left us to ourselves which was perfect. The directions to the property were spot on. The key arrangements were very helpful. Overall we had a marvelous time. Jan 2008.
  20. A beautiful cottage, wonderful garden and the welcome bottle of wine was a lovely touch. Sept 2007.
