Property Description

Peaceful location.

Detached thatched cottage for 2/4.

One of a handful of old thatched cottages still left in Donegal. This property nestles in a little hollow, in a peaceful rural setting with beautiful surroundings and a lake within walking distance.

This pretty cottage, which has been sensitively restored with many original features retained, has woodburning stoves in both the living room and dining room/kitchen.

The Fanad Peninsula where the property is situated is an unspoilt scenic area with coastal drives, golden beaches, hedged country lanes and lakes and rivers. The area is good for fishing, golf, walking and relaxing. Shop and pub 2 miles, restaurant 4 miles.

All on ground floor: Living room with double futon bed. Dining room/kitchen. 1 double bedroom. Bathroom with toilet.

Woodburner in living room and dining room (initial fuel included). Solid fuel central heating and electricity (€20per week). Bed linen and towels included. Stereo/CD. Freezer. Enclosed garden and furniture. Parking (2 cars).

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. We loved this cottage although it will only be your ideal choice if you enjoy complete peace and quiet, character and a quaint and lovely personal touch. Secluded, surrounded by farmland and birdsong,it makes an ideal retreat. Splendid enclosed country garden with nice touches for sitting out. Perfect for lovely dogs walks along country lanes and on the beautiful Ballyhiernan Bay. Although tagged as Portsalon, it is about 5 kms north west, 1 mile from the beach, but for traditional Irish charm and really thoughtful touches by Sean and Jean (wood burning stoves, lovely bed, great books, Le Creuset cooking set) you really can’t beat this. We’ll be back! May 2011.
  2. I found the cottage everything and more, It has a real feeling of stepping back in time, perfect place to go for retreat. Jan 2011.
  3. Original Irish Thatched cottage, scenic and atmospheric. Right in the midst of an area of outstanding beauty. Very quiet. Oct 2010.
  4. Secluded, deep in the Hills of Donegal, with wonderful starry nights. Cosy thatch with thick walls. Oct 2010.
  5. The accommodation was good, very olde world. Although quite basic, it was comfortable and clean. Sept 2010.
  6. Everything you expect from an original thatched period cottage. May 2010.
  7. It was a typical old Irish thatched cottage in an ideal setting with plenty of room on both inside and outside. May 2010.
  8. Beautifully set and characterful. April 2010.
  9. Very spacious, and welcoming. Aug 2009.
  10. Local beaches were excellent, and a drive around the Fanad head coastal road gave wonderful views. The cottage is located in a beautiful remote area in the Fanad Peninsula, about the same level north as Port Salon, but on the west side of the peninsula. It would really help if for the last 8 or 9 kilometers if a simple sketch map was given in the info pack. July 2009.
  11. If you’d love to see what a traditional Irish cottage is like, this is the place for you! It is what in the Scottish Highlands and Islands would be called a "Blackhouse". It is both easy and fascinating to see the clever construction of these humble dwellings from a stay in this charming cottage. It has one or two modern additions like a bathroom, cooker and fridge but these do not detract from the feeling of stepping back into the past. The gardens are beautiful and the sea can be viewed between the trees. This is the ideal location for people seeking tranquility and breathing space for the spirit. The local people were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us. We will certainly return. Sept 2008.
  12. The cottage is idyllic and would certainly go back today if we could! July 2008.
  13. A really charming cottage - cosy and homely! Oct 2008.
  14. This is exactly what I want when I searching for an "Irish Cottage" The owner certainly ticked all the right boxes for me, we had exceptionally good weather and the Fanad peninsula was lovely. May 2008.
  15. Ideal for a get away from it all holiday. May 2008.
