Property Description

" Between coast and country ... a collection of designer cottages enjoying the best of both worlds "

Situated in a quiet and peaceful rural location on the edge of the pretty hamlet of Tawstock, these four attractive holiday cottages (refs HYA, HYB, HYC and HYD) are only 7 miles from the nearest beach at Instow and conveniently close to all facilities at Barnstaple. The properties have been converted from a range of old stone barns presented in a fresh contemporary style. With the owners living in the original farmhouse, they form part of the traditional farm courtyard, though Park Gate is no longer a working farm. Each holiday cottage is individual in design, well equipped and comfortable, with attractive furnishing fabrics and attention to detail. Each has patio doors from the living room leading to its own decked patio and lawned garden, perfect for al fresco meals while watching the sun set.
This is an excellent location for exploring the magnificent coastline of North Devon, from the ‘Golden Coast’ with fine sandy surfing beaches at Woolacombe, Croyde and Saunton, to the rugged cliffs of Hartland Point. The coastal footpath offers superb walking with wonderful views of the dramatic shoreline, while inland the wild beauty of Exmoor waits to be discovered. Bideford Bay takes in its sweep along Westward Ho!, Hartland Point and the beautiful village of Clovelly – much loved by photographers. Instow and the old ship-building port of Appledore shelter in the mouth of the Torridge Estuary, and regular boat trips to Lundy can be taken from Bideford. Casual cyclists who fancy a spin in the countryside under their own steam will appreciate the Tarka Trail, a popular flat route that is easy to manage and runs from Meeth near Okehampton; it winds its way to Braunton and can be picked up at Barnstaple, just 2 miles from the cottages. There are plenty of places to visit nearby, including a number of family attractions such as The Big Sheep, Funderzone and The Milky Way which have covered amusements for children of all ages. At Great Torrington, there are the famous and stunning RHS gardens at Rosemoor. Whilst there, it certainly worth a visit to the Dartington Crystal factory glass works (7 miles), where molten glass is expertly fashioned into unique works of art by the glass blowers. Horse riding, golf, surfing lessons and fishing can all be organised locally. The nearby town of Barnstaple offers good shops and restaurants, a weekly market and pannier market, theatre, cinema and sports facilities. Shops 2½ miles.

Maple is a pretty cottage with country views from the kitchen window and benefits from a spacious entrance hallway. The bathroom has a decorative sea theme, created in the unusual pictures. Outside, there is a lawned area leading from the decked patio.

One step to spacious entrance hallway. Large open-plan living/dining room with patio doors to decked patio. Modern kitchen. Cloakroom with toilet. First floor: Three bedrooms; one double with en-suite shower room and toilet, one twin and one single with additional pull-out bed (for +1). Bathroom with toilet.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. A great place for families with children, whatever the weather. Oct 2011.
  2. Perfect getaway location, ideally located for everything Devon has to offer. The accommodation was excellent, with every facility you need for that home from home feeling. Plenty of room for animals and children to run riot alike. Nothing was too much trouble, and all you have to do is ask. Will be going back with a much larger group, having seen what the other properties on site can offer. Sept 2011.
  3. Plenty of room for our two year old to run around in the garden and play area. Sept 2011.
  4. Great location. Very attractive cottage with a good layout for family living. Sept 2010.
  5. This cottage was ranked very highly on the visitors book (at the cottage). We definitely agree with previous visitors as it was really ’’home away from home’’. It was very clean and all beds comfy. Would not hesitate to go back. Sept 2010.
  6. Ideal location for touring all the area. Quiet in the evenings. Aug 2010.
  7. The property was clean and perfectly placed to visit nearby beaches. For us having dogs, the grassed area adjacent to the property would ideally have been fenced off to form a secure enclosure. Oct 2009.
  8. It was in a lovely location with excelent facilities and very well maintained. The childrens’ play area was a lovely addition and was fully used by our toddler! Sept 2009.
  9. The property was very clean and comfortable with everything to hand, although tastefully furnished was also family oriented. Aug 2009.
  10. 2nd visit to this very comfortable, light and spacious property, with direct access via balcony/ decking to large mown field at rear with children’s play area, tennis court and plenty of room for dogs to play safely. Very quiet and peaceful area. Friendly and helpful owner. Fresh flowers, wine and/or tea/coffee on arrival. Masses of reading material and CDs/DVDs available. Well equipped kitchen and very good toilet facilities. Aug 2009.
  11. Fantastic property for adults and children alike. Attention to detail was great - flowers, wine on arrival, kids videos and toys went down a treat. July 2009.
  12. Very well "stocked". The little things meant a lot. A good deal of thought had gone into making it a home-from-home. July 2009.
  13. Very friendly owners and a lovely cottage. There was even a bottle of wine on arrival! The location is beautiful and the owners have thought of everything. Feb 2009.
  14. The accommodation was outstanding - extremely well equipped, well furnished and comfortable. June 2008.
  15. Our children loved the huge gardens with their play equipment and the horses in the field next door. The games room was also useful for a rainy day. May 2007.
  16. Excellent standard of accommodation with thoughtful touches, like fresh flowers and a bottle of wine on arrival. Fantastic surrounding countryside and charming unspoilt village, all very central for exploring Devon. May 2006.
