The Stable (ref 28907) and Little Pentre Barn (ref 28908) occupy a peaceful, rural location about 1 mile from the pretty village of Overton-on-Dee in the heart of border country where Wales meets Cheshire and Shropshire. These two detached holiday cottages are adjacent to the owner’s home and set in their own grounds, with separate private gardens. They share a further 3 acres of land with play area, heated outdoor swimming pool with slide, ‘pirates’ den’ and a small pond, complete with island. Above the swimming pool is a covered terrace which offers magnificent views towards the Shropshire border and is the perfect place in which to relax with a drink on a warm summer’s evening. England lies just beyond the lower boundary of the grounds, where the Shellbrook stream marks the very edge of Wales. There is ample parking and bike storage on site. The Stable and Little Pentre Barn offer something for everyone, making this a great base. Relax in the gardens or explore the grounds (children must be supervised at all times); a few minutes’ walk across the fields leads to the banks of the River Dee. Enjoy scenic walks and cycle rides right from the door or visit the local meres. Picturesque Llangollen, the Roman city of Chester and medieval Shrewsbury are just a short drive. There are several NT properties close by. At Chirk, 8 miles, admire the medieval fortress of Chirk Castle, often with activities for young children, and the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct which carries the canal. Walk across this and explore a couple of long canal tunnels nearby. Erddig, a stately home surrounded by lovely gardens, is 7 miles and brims with antiques. Further afield is Powis Castle, 28 miles, set in a stunning location with one of the best landscaped gardens in the country. Visit Hawkstone Follies, 23 miles, a group of rather odd grottos, monuments, underground passages and ornate buildings set on a magnificent escarpment, or Park Hall, 11 miles, an award winning outdoor farm, good for young children. Llangollen is 15 miles with its steam railway giving lovely views of the mountains. Oswestry, 12 miles, has a large bronze age castle mound, very interesting shops, old buildings and a market. Ellesmere, 4 miles, has a swing park, boat hire and excellent lakeside tea shop/restaurant. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.
