Property Description

This 16th-century Grade II listed barn has been skilfully converted to provide a unique and outstanding holiday home - with every detail having been taken into consideration from the hand-made door hinges, handles, old flagstones and oak floors, down to two doors made by Mouseman Thompson. Ancient Chinese and Roman pottery feature throughout the house, and in the entrance hall, two trees have been planted into the flagstone floor, adding an unusual touch. On the first floor, a spacious 40-foot galleried, beamed living room adds further charm. The house is furnished throughout with interesting antique furniture from the Arts and Crafts era, a movement founded by William Morris.
Old Forge Barn lies within walking distance of Stow market square, where there are excellent restaurants, old inns, galleries and many interesting shops. The towns and villages of the Cotswolds are a delight to tour, with stunning countryside in all directions. Burford has an excellent wildlife park and the pretty town itself is a pleasure to browse around, whilst at Stratford-upon-Avon, daily guided tours are offered to all the places of interest in this World Heritage City of Shakespearian fame. For alternative days out, Oxford is easily accessible, as is Cheltenham. Blenheim Palace is within 30 miles. Shops 400 yards.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Marvelous in all respects: especially the quality, comfort and cleanliness of the property. A phone call from the owner, during our stay, was appreciated. The only criticism would be the lack of privacy between the ’en-suite’ facilities and the sleeping area in both main bed-rooms. Perhaps a pull-across screen or curtain could be installed? March 2012.
  2. Great location right in the centre of Stow which is a really good sized town with excellent facilities. Dec 2011.
  3. The barn was in an ideal location in the centre of Stow, but because it was tucked away along a private road it was also very quiet. The size of the barn overall was impressive, and the main lounge with an open fire was an excellent feature. There were many idiosyncratic features that were interesting, but some will find a little irritating (eg the lighting arrangements and the bathrooms). None of which change the view that it is a holiday venue to be recommended. Nov 2011.
  4. Ideal location for shopping in Stow and surrounding villages. Beautiful cottage with its own uniqueness. Oct 2011.
  5. Very interesting property with lots of interesting design features and furniture. Some elements are not especially child-friendly requiring careful parenting (roman vase plus 5-year-old equals anxiety). May 2011.
  6. A very quintessential British accommodation - full of character and interests. Located a short walk from the town centre where cream teas, a pre dinner drink to many options for evening meals could be had. Walking from the Forge was easy to get into the county and there were many delightful walks. March 2011.
  7. Beautiful barn conversion, very tastefully furnished. Excellent location for visiting the Cotswolds. Oct 2010.
  8. Quirky with character. Sept 2010.
  9. The property was beautiful but also comfortable and welcoming. Aug 2010.
  10. We were a party of 6 and immediately felt at home in the barn. Stow is a lovely town with no shortage of shops, pubs and tea shops. We really enjoyed our stay and would highly recommend it. Hopefully we will return.
  11. Ideally situated for the town of Stow. The town centre is only a 2 minute walk. A very spacious barn conversion which is full of character. Nov 2009.
  12. The accommodation was quite quirky and may not suit all holiday makers. My husband and I loved it but members of our party said it was a case of style over practicality. Nov 2009.
  13. Very charming, bit shabby round the edges, making it easy to feel at home and comfortable. Sept 2009.
  14. Quirky and full of character. Sept 2009.
  15. Wonderful, comfy barn in an ideal location within walking distance of Stow. Perfect place for a family get together, & the added touch of courtesy telephone calls from a very caring owner. Feb 2009.
  16. A most impressive property. April 2009.
  17. Wonderful & relaxing accommodation. May 2009.
  18. Beautiful very spacious property with lovely interior, plants including pink cyclamen and pink hyacinths. Underfloor heating below the flagstones kept everywhere warm and welcoming. Literally a stone’s throw from the shops, inns and restaurants. Info provided for local walks and sightseeing in the local pretty countryside. Jan 2008.
  19. Beautiful property and very convenient for the centre of Stow, never any need to get in the car if you don’t want to. May 2008.
  20. What a hidden gem! This cottage property was an absolute pleasure to stay in, our party of 8 had plenty of room and fun! An excellent choice for anybody looking to stay in one of our most beautiful Cotswold villages. Sept 2008
