Property Description

In the delightful Friston Forest village of Westdean, these carefully converted Grade II listed barns with exposed beams date back to 1597 and are double award winning (award for excellent conversion of a 16thC listed ox barn). Now a Christmas tree and apple juice farm it was once owned by Alfred the Great. Free archaeology and history tour available for guests. Recent excavations revealed that the site had Neolithic occupation circa 2700BC, and an Elizabethan terrace and Jacobean banqueting house, the centre of a wider holding mentioned in Domesday Book which stretched from the River Cuckmere to Jevington. There are also ruins of an Elizabethan manor house, restored 14th century dovecote and ox farmyard of the 18th and 19th century. Quebec Barn (ref 26956) was used as local headquarters by Canadian forces in WW ll. Walking plus cycle trails (hire centre, ½ mile). Seven Sisters Country Park, 1 mile, and a secluded beach 1½ miles. Visit Brighton and the historical ’Lanes’, Eastbourne and stroll along the Victorian pier, Drusillas Zoo, Beachy Head and Glyndebourne (opera in the grounds during the summer) within 5 miles. Pevensey Castle, Battle and 1066 country within 10 miles. Shops 4 miles, pubs 11/2 miles. Properties (refs 19748, 19749 and 26956) can be booked together for larger parties.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. The property was ideal for two people (often quite hard to find properties just for two). The village is in the middle of the Friston Forest, so there were lots of walks to do and it was ideal because we took our spaniel. The village was peaceful and quiet and the owner of the properties very kind and helpful. We really enjoyed the history tour of the farm. July 2012.
  2. Lovely and peaceful location plenty of good walks and very near to seaford and eastbourn. April 2012.
  3. Excellent location in wood, great for walking dogs etc, not too far from Brighton if wanted. Oct 2011.
  4. Beautiful and peaceful location. Numerous attractions & places to visit in the area. Owners Archaeological tour very interesting and gave a good overview of the fascinating history of the site. Aug 2011.
  5. Julian (owner) very friendly and helpful. Nice touched in the cottage: homemade cake and some teabags and milk to have a drink with on arrival. Good jam, eggs and juice available to buy and out into cottage for arrival. Cottage was well furnished, welcomed dogs and had a good area outside for eating, especially grateful for the use of the field next to the cottage for letting dog off inbetween walks! Good location for walks in woods and for seeing sights there. Tip: Take a pram with good big wheels for walking in the woods - we only took a ’city’ pram not our dog walking one and it got a bit bumpy in some places! May 2011.
  6. Beautiful cottage in a perfect location. Cottage is an ideal size for a couple with a medium sized dog. Plenty of walks right on your door step. Owner was extremely helpful, we enjoyed the historical tour of the farm and produce from the farm shop especially the eggs! March 2011.
  7. The barn is set in a quiet location, but close to many beautiful tourist sites in E. Sussex. We could cycle from the property in several directions for a whole day’s outing,so were spoilt for choice! Feb 2011.
  8. The barn was perfect, really cosy. It was stylish with good fixtures and fittings. The owners are friendly and willing. I would recommend this accommodation and will certainly go back. Jan 2011.
  9. Unique. Wonderful setting. Very cosy. Would have preferred a small sofa rather than 2 armchairs. Dec 2010.
  10. Cosy, quiet, really helpful owner, fantastic situation for walking the south downs. July 2010.
  11. Set in the beautiful tiny village of West Dean in East Sussex, nice walking paths for owners and dogs, good setting to visit nearby towns. July 2010.
  12. Very clean and new and good quality fixtures and fittings. April 2010.
  13. Tucked away in a secluded historic village, seemingly miles from anywhere, but close enough to get the very best out of southern England. Great for two people and a dog to have a very good holiday. March 2010.
  14. Beautiful setting, homely cottage, lots of local advice (walks, pubs). Feb 2010.
  15. Quiet, clean, friendly people. Feb 2010.

  19. Very cosy. Fantastic location. Owner very helpful. Oct 2009.
  20. The property is small but very comfortable, it is set in beautiful countryside and not far from a beach, good walking - a footpath in every corner of the village and the owner is very friendly and helpful and provides a very enjoyable tour of the history of his property. Its a great place to get away from it all and just chill. Aug 2009.
