Property Description

The epitome of an English Country Cottage, this beautiful house and adjacent lodge stand detached and away from the road, near the picturesque thatched village of Wickhambreaux. Located within peaceful and tranquil grounds, each property oozes character, with a wealth of beams and wood panelling throughout. The main cottage dates back to circa 1660 and features a sumptuous drawing room with cosy open fire in inglenook, as well as a light and spacious kitchen/dining area. Together the two properties form spacious accommodation for large families or friends holidaying together. The conservatory/games room and the large lawned garden are just perfect for keeping the children amused whilst the adults relax with a good book and a glass of wine.
Memory House is ideally situated for exploring historic Canterbury. With history spanning two thousand years, the city offers an attractive traffic-free centre ringed by ancient walls, a magnificent cathedral and abbey, and a wide variety of shops, restaurants, galleries and museums, including the famous Canterbury Tales. Day trips to France are possible via the Channel Tunnel or ferry from Dover, and the designer outlet shopping centre at Ashford makes for a fun detour en route to the ferry! For children, John Aspinall’s renowned Howletts Zoo, as well as a selection of sandy beaches, can be found within 20 minutes. Whitstable is also popular for days out – in particular for its oysters. Alternatively there are a number of castles to explore in the region, including Henry VIII’s castles at Deal and Walmer. Golf, riding and pleasant walks locally. Shop 1½ miles.

The main house: Beamed, oak-panelled drawing room with open fire in inglenook, leading to conservatory/games room. Large beamed dining room with polished wooden floor, leading to open-plan well-equipped modern fitted kitchen with Aga and electric hob with electric oven, and living room with French doors to garden. Separate cloakroom/toilet. Two sets of steep stairs to first floor (one via living room): Double bedroom with 5ft bed and en-suite bathroom with shower attachment and toilet. Two twin bedrooms, one with en-suite bathroom with Victorian roll-top bath and toilet. Bathroom with shower attachment and toilet. Some bedrooms beamed. The Lodge: Living room with sink, fridge and tea/coffee making facilities, and sofa-bed (for alternative sleeping only). Beamed twin bedroom with piano and en-suite bathroom with toilet. First floor: Double bedroom with 5ft bed and en-suite bathroom with toilet.

  1. A very quaint beautiful cottage with many interesting features. Maintained to a very high standard as was the furniture. May 2012.
  2. For the quintessential English Cottage getaway I can thoroughly recommend this beautiful cottage. It has ample room for 12 guests, is beautifully clean, well provisioned, in a gorgeous location with enough to keep three generations happy and comfortable - our group aged from 1 to 81. Any season, this would be a lovely place to escape. March 2012.
  3. All 11 of us, with 4 under 10s, had a wonderful few days at this cottage. Bags of character and a very spacious kitchen area which was just what we needed. The traditional fireplace and living room provided a great venue to relax, enjoy fine wine and fix the worlds problems... March 2012.
  4. We had a lovely family xmas in this house. The accommodation worked really well with everyone having their own bathroom. We liked the space downstairs with the open plan kitchen/diner. We had a real fire and comfortable sofas. The area was interesting with good walks, beaches and the zoo close by. We would highly recommend it as a family break. Dec 2011.
  5. We had a fantastic weekend to celebrate my birthday with all the family. The house and lodge were superb, very well equipped. Plenty of bathrooms so nobody had to wait in the morning!!. The garden was excellent and very safe for my grandchildren to play in, they had a great time on the climbing frame and slide. All five grandchildren were fascinated by the two staircases. We all appreciated the log fire in the lounge. The old part of the house was lovely, as was the inglenook fireplace. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Memory House and Lodge and hope in the not to distant future to go again. Oct 2011.
  6. Lovely old home (1660), but with nice upgrades to kitchen and baths. Roomy and a good value for the 10 days we were there. Owner was very nice and helpful. Local pubs were very good and friendly. July 2011.
  7. A wonderful location in a wunderful environment. We come back. Wonderful memories of "Memory House". March 2011.
  8. Plenty of space for everyone to do their own thing - games room and 2 living areas. Well equipped and spacious kitchen allowing ease of food preparation for large groups. Plenty of bathrooms. Dec 2010.
  9. I loved the old English country feel of the wood panelling and a roaring open fire watching the snow - it was perfect for our friends 40th wedding anniversary! Dec 2010.
  10. There was plenty of space in the house and garden for my large family and the local area was fine for local country walking. Unfortunately, the facilities were not really tested because my son’s visit, with Italian wife and 2 young children, was aborted because of last minute flight cancellation from Italy. May 2010.
  11. It was perfect because all bedrooms had their own bathroom. May 2010.
  12. I liked the character, style & size. The living spaces were generous & especially loved the kitchen which was great for catering for a large group. Jan 2010.
  13. Full of character, lovely location and very well equipped. Oct 2009.
  14. An excellent place for a family. May 2009.
  15. Owner’s handbook and suggestions excellent. Spacious in beautiful surroundings. Superbly equipped. Aug 2009.
  16. The weather was what you expect in December. Directions to the property could have been better- maybe a little map as it was exceptionally hard to find. The cottage was charming. Old but clean, historic but with all mod cons. Spacious and homely. Dec 2008.
  17. My colleagues and I who spent our second weekend there, felt very comfortable at Memory House and and have decided to use it again next year. The owners were very helpful when we contacted them about a problem with the new stove. Overall, the lovely house and superb situation makes it a very desirable property to stay in with a large group, whatever the weather! The conservatory/ games room is a huge bonus! I am sorely tempted to get all my children and grandchildren there for a Christmas celebration soon! A beautiful place! Sept 2008.
  18. Good for people who want a bit of privacy at night time as they can sleep in the Lodge. Nov 2008.
  19. It was a lovely very comfortable and homely cottage in the middle of beautiful Kent countryside. I would recommend this for peace and tranquility. Sept 2008.
  20. A typical English country garden combined with a beautiful cottage. June 2007.
