Property Description

"A delightful base for your holiday, set in glorious countryside close to unspoilt beaches."

Marshwood Manor offers excellent accommodation and facilities in a tranquil rural setting, surrounded by Dorset’s loveliest countryside, and only 5 miles from the unspoilt beaches and golden sandstone cliffs of the coastline. The estate’s 10 acres of lawn, garden, pasture and woodland offer plenty of room for adults to stroll and children to play.
The properties have been carefully formed from a fine original range of buildings next to the manor house and may be booked together to accommodate larger groups holidaying together (property refs DEY, DFA, DEX, DUS and DWS). Previously filmed for BBC television, all retain character and charm, whilst offering comfortable holiday accommodation fitted to a high standard throughout. Each has its own garden or courtyard with furniture, and all enjoy shared use of the extensive gardens and grounds. There is a large games barn with pool table and table tennis, and a children’s play area with swings and slide. Approached along a private drive and set well back from the road, the cottages are perfectly positioned for enjoying this delightful corner of Dorset.
There are a variety of beautiful beaches, both sand and pebble, within a five to ten mile radius, including those at Lyme Regis, Charmouth, Seatown, Eype, West Bay and Burton Bradstock. Fossil-rich cliffs define this dramatic stretch of coastline, which encompasses the 2,000-acre National Trust estate of Golden Cap. This is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and superb walking country, both on the rolling chalk hills overlooking fertile inland valleys and on the coastal footpaths offering spectacular clifftop views. It is also an area full of romance and history, with three ancient hill forts and the house and gardens of Forde Abbey all nearby.
A range of attractions is on offer in nearby country towns. Lyme Regis is a pretty seaside resort, its elegant colour-washed buildings and promenade lining a handsome harbour. Motor boats can be hired and there are fishing trips, a sailing school and a windsurfing school. Bridport is a thriving market town, featured on TV’s River Cottage, the Port Bredy of Hardy’s novels, offering a good choice of shops, inns, restaurants, an arts centre and a sports centre with indoor pool. The coastline is excellent for sea fishing and inland waters offer good coarse fishing. Golfers will find courses at Lyme Regis and West Bay and there is also horse riding nearby within 5 miles. Caterers are available locally. The local shop at Marshwood and two charming thatched country pubs are within a short drive. Shops 2 miles.

Formerly two cottages, The Old Forge is an attractive and spacious cottage, offering ground floor accommodation all on one level. Large double-aspect living room with multi-fuel stove and beamed ceiling. Two steps to well-equipped fitted kitchen/dining room with range cooker, beamed ceiling and door to private garden. Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. The Forge was a lovely property and the Hayloft that we were moved to following the horrendous weather in July was even better - the owner was understanding and with no fuss moved all 8 of us to a new drier property - that is service for you. July 2012.
  2. Good family accommodation, the swimming pool makes up for the distance to the coast. The games room is a boon. Aug 2011.
  3. Despite being tucked away down narrow lanes this is an ideal place for families. The facilities, wendyhouse, games room and swings area are just right, not too ambitious but well-thought out. The weather wasn’t really good enough to use the swimming pool so I can’t comment on that. The owner was friendly and helpful. The cooking facilities in the property were superb. Our three-year old loved the toys, which are of excellent quality. The design of the property meant that we could have a good night’s sleep away from younger members of the family! May 2011.
  4. Spacious, clean and nicely furnished. Ideal for a group or for familes. Nov 2010.
  5. A good property, especially for children. July 2010.
  6. Lovely cottage which was very well equipped. Very spacious. Surrounding area was beautiful & well maintained. Use of pool a great bonus. July 2010.
  7. Splendid location, well laid out and appointed accommodation, very helpful owner. June 2010.
  8. Adequate space. Generous amount of crockery etc. Friendly owners. Excellent swimming pool. May 2010.
  9. Very good space, much bigger than anticipated, very quiet, lovely grounds. Appliances were ample, cleanliness was excellent. May 2010.
  10. Comfortable, clean, all appliances working. Owners very nice and very willing to help and explain things like the how to work the central heating and boiler. April 2010.
  11. Size was perfect for 8 adults, clean and tidy and well equipped. Jan 2010.
  12. We had an excellent stay at the Forge! The location is excellent; the cottage itself was perfect for our family. The babies loved the 2 play areas and the rabbits in the run were an instant hit. The pool was brilliant fun for all and the fields good to explore. The owners were very helpful and friendly. Sept 2009.
  13. We have been to the same set of cottages for 17 years running and have seen various owners. The current gentleman has vastly upgraded the properties without spoiling the natural family atmosphere. March 2009.
  14. Very spacious and well equipped accommodation. July 2009.
  15. Extremely friendly and helpful owners. Very dog & child friendly. May 2009.
  16. This was excellent accommodation for a family get together - one half was larger and ideal for the children to play in & be noisy. The games barn was also great fun for kids & adults. We even managed a swim in the pool in between the showers! Sept 2008.
  17. A very secluded and tranquil location, providing a peaceful break, yet not too far from the Jurassic coast. With friendly and helpful owners on site, and parking outside, The Forge was an excellent holiday location and with a piano in the living room, a chance to learn to play, or annoy the neighbours! June 2008.
  18. This was one of the best properties we have ever rented. The owners were most helpful and there were no faults at all with the cottage. Dec 2008.
  19. We almost needed bad weather to fully appreciate the facilities available at Marshwood Manor - instead we were distracted by the local beaches! The Forge in particular is a perfect setting for two families with young children as immediately outside is a very appropriate enclosed play area. The children also loved the rabbits, guinea pigs, sheep, larger play area and we all loved the pool - we only stayed for a weekend so we’ll be back for longer next time! June 2007.
  20. Lovely place to get away from it all. March 2007.
