Property Description

Situated in the lower part of the tiny hamlet of Thrupp, these two detached properties stand in the grounds of a manor house and lie adjacent to the 18th-century Oxford Canal. Offering wonderfully characterful accommodation for a holiday, they stand opposite one another: The Coach House (Ref NLX) is a spacious and imaginatively converted barn which overlooks open fields, whilst The Dovecote (Ref NLY) is a cosy little romantic hideaway for two.
In its day, the canal was a main artery to British industry, but in modern times, the barges move at a more relaxed pace. Thrupp starred as itself in the TV series Morse in the adaptation of Colin Dextor’s Last Bus to Woodstock. In Thrupp is The Boat public house with its open fire and beamed ceilings. A gentle, short stroll along the Oxford Canal towpath towards the nearby village of Kidlington leads to the Jolly Boatman on the A4260. Both pubs serve a selection of drinks and good food. There are many walks to be enjoyed nearby, either canal-side or through the owner’s managed woodland, along the banks of the River Cherwell, which is abundant with wildlife and birds. A ½-hour walk along the towpath or short drive in the car leads to Kidlington, which, recognised as the ‘largest village in England’, caters for every need - having several supermarkets, post office, chemists, launderette and various pubs and cafés. There is a nearby Park and Ride service into the city of Oxford as well as a regular bus service from the village. The M40 motorway is easily reached, connecting to either London or Birmingham in about 1 hour.
The properties make an ideal holiday base to explore the Cotswolds and Shakespeare’s Stratford-upon-Avon. The town of Woodstock, home to Blenheim Palace (birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill) and the village of Bladon (where Churchill is buried) are within 5 miles. Shops 2 miles, pubs ¼ mile.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. This is a lovely, well-equipped cottage in an idyllic location by the Oxford canal: there are beautiful walks and excellent cycling along the towpath. Our 2-year-old grandson had no problems in coping with the open-tread staircase. There is reliable wi-fi. May 2012.
  2. Overall a lovely property. Very good quality decor and furniture, on the whole. Lovely spot to walk from, along the canal. Near some nice towns, we went to Woodstock. Would say, if the house was full, not enough comfy chairs in main room. Nov 2011.
  3. Excellent location, very comfortable accommodation & well supplied with good quality china & glass. The master bedroom is superb, only slight criticism is awkwardness of semi-sunken bath/hand held shower under sloping roof. Fine for a weekend but less so for a longer stay. Given the size of the 2 other doubles, adding a shower cubicle/WC to the larger of these would really make this a first class property with facilities for 10. Oct 2011.
  4. Excellent facilities and location, could not find fault with anything, internet access a great bonus and welcome pack with tea / coffe and a fabulous cake were appricated. Lots to do in the area, walks, 2 great pubs and Oxford a few miles away. April 2011.
  5. The cottage is lovely and overlooks fields with horses. There was one stair gate supplied which we had not requested this came in very very handy. Driving down the lane to the Coach House we thought we had reached the end when we got to the pub. Maybe it would be useful to have a sign directing people. April 2011.
  6. The property was bigger than expected, in very good condition with lovely bedrooms and a great lounge with fire. Feb 2011.
  7. This house was set in a stunning location. The communal rooms, in particular the sitting room were perfect for large groups. The woodburning atone was lovely-perfect house for the winter. The bedrooms were also fantastic - particularly the double en-suite one! Jan 2011.
  8. The finish was excellent. It was very homely and met all our needs. Would highly recommend. Dec 2010.
  9. A lot of thought was put into the details of our comfort, and info for the area. Nov 2010.
  10. We booked the Coach House for our Silver Wedding for a large family gathering - it’s spacious and very comfortable and the attention to detail was amazing. Wonderful to have the canal outside with lovely walks and two pubs serving really good food within minutes walking distance away, also the owner’s contact was so helpful, we shall be booking again in the future, didn’t want to leave. Sept 2010.
  11. The property was beautiful - goose feather pillows and duvets, very comfortable beds and sofas. There was a cake waiting for us on arrival too. We didn’t want to leave! Aug 2010.
  12. Absolutely stunning - completely over our expectations. June 2010.
  13. Lovely accommodation, brilliant location to Oxford. Feb 2010.
  14. Its difficult to find any fault with the The Coach House, we had a wonderful weekend we could have happily stayed much longer! Jan 2010.
  15. Very comfortable and well equipped. Jan 2010.
  16. Excellent location & high standard of decor & furnishings. Lots of extras including a huge cake & tea/coffee etc. Dec 2009.
  17. It was extremely well presented and a great size. The location was perfect for a trip to Oxford but is a quiet and rural location. Nov 2009.
  18. The property is decorated to a very high standard and there are beautiful views from every room. The lounge was a fabulous size and perfect for a group to enjoy. The kitchen also had everything you could need. The bedrooms were all a good size and the master bedroom was exceptional. The location of the house is perfect if you want to get away from it all and relax as it is so peaceful. Overall, I had a fantastic time and it is a wonderful house! Oct 2009.
  19. The living room was really large and great for a large party. The accommodation was flexible and worked well for our group of three families. A great location for walking, and visiting Oxford, with a really good pub a few minutes walk away. Oct 2009.
  20. The property was clean, comfortable and very cosy. It was the perfect location to meet our needs on this occasion, which was a birthday weekend celebration. Lovely setting, and the sun shone all weekend! Oct 2009.
