Property Description

Reputed to have once been owned by Richard the Lionheart’s granddaughter, this 12th century former barn has been lovingly converted with an artistic attention to detail. The nearby market town of Villedieu-les-Pôeles is well-known for its tradition for making copper pots and pans. A little further afield lies the hilltop town of Vire with its 13th century fortified gateway, whilst Normandy’s most famous landmark, Le Mont St. Michel, is within an hour’s drive of Le Calipel. An ideal holiday base.

Location: 1.5km from St. Vigor (bar, shop), 3.5km from Pont Farcy (all facilities), 16km NE of Villedieu-les-Pôeles (market town, museums, zoo, copperworks), 20km NW of Vire (large town, golf, fishing lake), within an hour’s drive of historic Mont St. Michel and the cosmopolitan resort town of Granville.

  1. Very cosy but large property and clearly very old with an amazing fireplace and a very comfortable bed. Be prepared for it to be romantic and dark. Our torches came in useful at times. Owners great and enjoyed our chats with Donna. Amusing to see chickens and geese. I think male goose took to me as a challenge. Roads in the area so quiet, counted 8 vehicles between Gite and Villardue des Poules on one day. Since that is about 15 Kilometres I could wish it was like that around our village at home. Welcome pack brilliant. Oct 2012.
  2. Excellent welcome pack on arrival. Donna and Ed were perfect hosts. The property was comfortable and well equipped and in a wonderful location. A car is needed to explore the area but everything of interest within easy reach. Would very much recommend this property if you want peace and quiet and to get away from it all. June 2012.

  5. Lovely quaint rural gite. The owner could not have been more helpful and friendly and she went out of her way to make our stay as delightful as possible. We ended up staying longer than we originally intended and would recommend this place to anyone who wants to ’get away from it all’ without losing the trappings of satellite tv, great broadband connection and dishwasher.   6. If you are looking for a quiet and peaceful holiday this is the ideal location for any age. Donna is the perfect host there to help but not in your face. It also helps if you like animals. My wife Kathy and myself loved our time there. Sept 2011.
  7. Beautifully presented apartment in a very quiet relaxing area with lovely hosts. Don’t come here for expecting excitement but ideal for relaxing. Relies on a car to access but good location for local attractions. Would not suit children well as the property has a pond. June 2011.
  8. The property is set back away from the coastline, so if the Normandy beaches are your primary reason for seeing Normandy, you might want to stay somewhere closer to them. However, Normandy is more diverse than you might think, and for us, being in the remote countryside was a relaxing option. June 2011.

  10. If you are interested in history, this place has everything from the splendid and fascinating Plantagenet fireplace to the 1940s shoe and rumours about Rommel. It was great value for money and the owner is especially helpful. There are great trips to do - although the driving distances do mount up quickly because it is out of the way. Walking opportunities in the Vire Valley are also pretty good. Probably not a place to stay if you are not used to the sound (and frequent appearance) of farm and other animals but I loved it. Mont St Michel is about 45 mins drive, the Scriptorial Museum in Avranches about 30 mins, St Malo an hour. Going the other way it would be about 45 mins to Caen or Bayeux. The weather wasn’t bad but a bit stormy - shame I had been commuting the previous 6 weeks of solid sunshine. Overall, it is a very atmospheric place. April 2011.
  11. The cottage is very rustic and in a rural location. We enjoyed the feeling of getting away from it all, but also the chance to reach Normandy’s major tourist attractions Mont St. Michel and Bayeaux within an hour. This is not a cottage for those wishing to have shops and bars on their doorstep, but it is ideal for those, like us, who want a nice comfortable place and to wake to the sound of geese and chickens rather than traffic.   12. It was far from the madding crowd. You could hear a pin drop apart from chickens and geese and no light pollution. A beautiful part of France. The property was self contained, comfortable and clean. The wood fired stove was wonderful in the chilly evenings. Bedroom and bathroom very comfortable, not so much the living room furniture.
