Property Description

In Charente but near the border of the Dordogne, this beautiful holiday property is set in the Bandiat Valley on the outskirts of the pretty village of Marthon. Very well restored, this barn conversion is set next to the home of the Anglo-French owners who are most helpful with advice on places to visit. Well-equipped and very comfortably furnished, it has its own private enclosed garden with a swimming pool, and a shaded, furnished terrace with stone pillars. Cycle on a converted old railway line, on a path via Marthon, or have superb walks all around. There is a good golf course at Ecuras at less than half an hour’s drive as well as a beautiful man-made lake with a beach that the children will love at St. Estèphe. Water-ski on the large lake at Angoulême - an interesting old town nearby with cobbled streets full of interesting shops. Do not miss the markets all around for special local food and wines but also the Pineau aperitif made from Cognac.

  4. In a fortnight in which the sky was cloudless and the sun hot most of the time, the availability of the fantastic pool was a real bonus. We really enjoyed walking (and running) on the long distance footpath which passes through the village East to West. The owners were unobtrusively helpful. Aug 2011.
  5. Having rented gites in many diverse areas of France over many years this was the best stocked I have ever found. There was nothing that was not provided, much of which was unexpected. The owners were unobtrusive but available and the house was a credit to them. Possibly the photographs do not do complete justice to the property. Aug 2010.
