Property Description

"An ancient landscape of rolling downs, sheltered valleys
and Iron Age forts, immortalised in Hardy’s writings ..."

Enjoying a truly tranquil position in the village of Harcombe Bottom, close to the popular resort of Lyme Regis, Harcombe House offers a variety of accommodation to suit all tastes and requirements. The house started life as a Victorian gentleman’s residence, and was later used as a boarding house for the local public school. Surrounded by 9-acre grounds, comprising gardens brimming with rhododendrons, well-tended lawns and shady woodland, each property is furnished to a good standard and enjoys shared use of an indoor swimming pool, hard tennis court and games room and well-equipped children’s playroom – making this an attractive choice for families. With sandy beaches, a host of seaside attractions, and beautiful countryside peppered with picture-postcard villages, all on the doorstep, Harcombe House truly is an ideal holiday location for exploring the delights of Dorset.
Just 2 miles distant lies Lyme Regis, setting for the TV adaptation of John Fowles’ novel A French Lieutenant’s Woman. Here colourful fishing vessels and pleasure craft line the pretty harbour, and a host of outdoor activities, such as fishing, boating, sailing and windsurfing tuition, and golf can be enjoyed. Superb coastal walks can be taken along the World Heritage Coast, with its stretches of fossil beaches to explore, and magnificent views to admire from Golden Cap – the highest point on England’s south coast at 626-ft high.
Nearby, Hardy Country beckons visitors to discover the rolling green pastures and pretty thatched villages made famous in his novels, while for a great family day out, the Georgian seaside town of Weymouth is within easy reach, offering in addition to its harbour and sandy beaches, a host of all-weather attractions, as well as several RSPB sanctuaries. Also well worth a day trip is the county town of Dorchester (20 miles), alias Hardy’s Casterbridge; offering a bustling market square, and some excellent shops and restaurants, Dorchester is also a great base from which to explore the impressive Maiden Castle rising up from the plains. Exeter is within easy driving distance, its skyline dominated by the distinctive monument of St Peter’s Cathedral. Other important historical buildings in the city include the 14th-century Guildhall, several ancient churches and the restored Quayside with its Custom House dating back to 1681. Another town well worth a visit is Weymouth, with many attractions for all the family. The Sea Life Park gives the opportunity to get close to sharks and rays, the Deep Sea Adventure tells the sobering story of the Titanic disaster and The Timewalk contains an entertaining and educational walk-through exhibition of Weymouth’s maritime and brewing past.
Nearby Sidmouth boasts nearly 500 buildings listed as having special historic or architectural interest, and in August the town hosts what many consider to be the country’s best folk festival at the beginning of August. Folk and roots artists from around the world as well as dance and theatre companies take over various venues in the eight-day event. The fishing village of Beer lies huddled within a small sheltered cove between gleaming white headlands. Much of the village remains unchanged since the time when it was a smugglers’ eyrie. With numerous stately homes and gardens to visit locally, including Abbotsbury Swannery and Tropical Gardens, ancient forts perched upon hilltops affording far-reaching views and a host of seaside towns, including Seaton (with its tramway) stretching along the coastline, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this part of the country. Shops ¾ mile.

All on the ground floor. Living room with rugs on wooden floor. Dining hall with rugs on wooden floor. Compact kitchen with tiled floor. Double bedroom. Shower room and toilet. First floor: Twin bedroom with sloping ceiling.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Good location on the border of Dorset, Somerset and Devon. Indoor Swimming Pool a must for us. Sept 2012.
  2. We hired three cottages for a school reunion as it used to be the boys boarding house. We had a fantastic weekend reminiscing about the old days! All the cottages were nicely equipped and decorated. We will be booking again for the next reunion! Sept 2012.
  3. Harcombe house is an excellent place to stay for families. Knoll was a perfect cottage for a family of four - with everything we needed supplied. The owners are very helpful and thoughtful. The accommodation includes the use of a lovely swimming pool and games room with some toys for younger children. The grounds are well kept and there are some lovely walks around the property to explore. It is a few minutes drive to Lyme Regis from Harcome House and there is plenty to do there too - great museums, shops and of course fossil hunting on the beach! It is a great base to explore both Dorset and Devon. April 2012.
  4. The cottage was very clean and well equipped and we felt immediately ’at home’. The grounds and amenities were great. Would have been nice if the swimming pool had opened earlier than 10 am, but that is the only slight complaint about an otherwise perfect holiday. March 2012.
  5. A comfortable base for a family holiday. You definitely need a car - the nearest pub, shop and bus stop are a half hour walk away up a steep-ish hill. We loved the pool and the scenery is gorgeous. July 2011.
  6. Fantastic location. Lovely property with amazing facilities on the doorstep. I would certainly recommend to friends and would love to return. April 2011.
  7. Harcombe House is situated about two miles away from Lyme Regis, it is in quite a remote area off the beaten track half way up a country road wide enough for one car. The location is ideal if you want to use it as a base to walk from or to drive from, however it can be a long walk if you want to pop out to the pub or the shops. The accommodation was clean tidy & warm & exceeded expectations. March 2011.
  8. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Knoll, great facilities and peaceful surroundings. Oct 2010.
  9. My wife and I booked on recommendation from part of our family who had been to Harcombe House about a month previously. We were not disapointed, great place, great area, the owners were excellent hosts. Would highly recommend and certainly go again. Mr and Mrs Archer. Oct 2010.
  10. Our son and family stayed in this property, while we stayed in Yawl. They seemed pleased with everything in the apartment. Aug 2010.
  11. Very friendly, although the wi fi internet did not work. June 2010.
  12. Clean, welcoming and comfortable. May 2010.
  13. Fabulous place. Clean and homely - will definitely recommend and return! We loved the fact that the arrival was so easy. There was no one there to greet us, but it was very easy and very welcoming (after a long drive you dont always want to make small talk! but get the kettle on and settle in which we were able to do as there were tea bags and milk to do this in the accommodation and some lovely biscuits - A great touch. The owners then made themselves known a little later - they were lovely!) We then did not see them again but didnt have cause to. We did however feel that they were around should we require assistance. May 2010.
  14. Has everything you may need in self catering accommodation. To arrive to a small supply of tea bags, milk and biscuits was a nice touch. May 2010.
  15. This was a lovely place to stay - very quiet and pretty surroundings. The pool was great. April 2010.
  16. The accommodation was perfect for a young family. The swimming pool and trampoline were very popular with my two young children and they loved sleeping in the attic bedroom. The rest of the house was well equipped, making for a highly enjoyable holiday. The location is fantastic, so peaceful yet near to so many places to visit. We have booked already to go back next year! April 2010.
  17. Wonderfully thought out property layout wise! Very comfortable. It was very convenient to have access to the communal indoor swimming pool directly behind the property, via the property’s back door. March 2010.
  18. The property was clean and welcoming and the facilities onsite were perfect for our 4 year and 15 month old boys. March 2010.
  19. Modern, nice, clean, great for a small family. Feb 2010.
  20. Nice, clean, ideal for our family, the kids loved sleeping in the attic, handy for the pool and activity room. Oct 2009.
