Property Description

Situated at Staithes, near Whitby, these former World War 1 army barracks are in an idyllic position close to the countryside and sea. Four of the barracks have been ingeniously and tastefully transformed to provide good quality accommodation retaining much rustic character and charm. The remaining 7 lodges retain their near original condition as a visual reminder of their former function. Each refurbished lodge has the added advantage of parking and an outdoor sitting area.
Situated just off the Cleveland Way, there are many fine moorland and cliff top walks as well as golf links nearby. There is a leisure centre 2 miles down the road and a 2-minute stroll down the cobbled street brings you to the centre of the picturesque fishing village with its small harbour nestling beneath rugged cliffs. Step back in time and walk the quaint narrow passages, as Captain James Cook himself must have done. Here in Staithes there are village shops, pubs, cafes and a restaurant. Why not travel on Harry Potter’s Hogwarts Express (the North Yorkshire Moors Railway) through ’Heartbeat’ country or visit Whitby and its famous Abbey which is 11 miles away.
NB: As the four lodges are in close proximity to one another, they could be booked for groups of up to 24 guests. Additional en-suite rooms available on site, on request with owner.

  1. It was my 40th wedding anniversary and we could not have picked a better place, my 3 grandchildren played in a very safe garden and went fishing 3 minutes down road. The bedrooms were clean and tidy, we loved the one with the double bed plus bunk beds for a safe family sleep. it was big enough for a family of 10 plus the dog, lovely lovely place. My thanks to the people that own it. March 2012.

Lots of interest in the area and convenient to the old village of Staithes which can be reached on foot by road or footpath - located close to the Coastal path.   11. We had a wonderful time and were very sad to leave. There is plenty of space so even though we were a large group we did not at any time feel as though we were falling over each other, and getting in each others way. The children enjoyed the space both inside and outside, and the village itself was beautiful. We were made welcome where ever we went, and hope to return one day. March 2009.

  13. The holiday was enjoyed by everyone including our two dogs, a great dane and a cross terrier who happens to be an escape artist. The enclosed garden did confine him to the property as was stated in the accommodation details. He didn’t give up trying though. Thanks for a great holiday we would definately consider going again.   16. The size of the accommodation is excellent - we had a family get together and there was plenty of space to sit around the table and eat together and enough lounge space to talk in groups - excellent layout. Jan 2007.
  17. We loved the conservatory in Captain’s Quarters with the growing vine. We spent early evenings in this room having tea and reading and it was a very pleasant restful atmosphere. The rest of the living accommodation was excellent for a big party like ours. There was plenty of seating in both the conservatory and main living, a large dining table and sufficient chairs for all. Also much appreciated the well supplied kitchen when cooking for large numbers in terms of pans, pots, crockery and cutlery. Although the immediate appearance of the buildings was inevitably bizarre (they are converted barracks) the inside was well thought out and commodious. May 2007.
