Property Description

Quiet village location

Hidden behind the plain 17th century lakeland exterior, lies this unique gem of a cottage. It has exposed beams, a superb dual-fuel cast stove, a 17th century stone bread oven and a winding stone staircase, together with modern comfort. This delightful terraced cottage was the birthplace in 1766 of John Dalton, founder of the atomic theory. Extremely quiet and peaceful, it is very close to the boundary of the Lake District National Park with the lakes of Loweswater, Crummock and Buttermere, within 10 miles by country lanes. The market town of Cockermouth is 3 miles. Shop 1.5 miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

Ground floor: Living room with French door. Dining room/kitchen. Utility room. Uneven, winding stone stairs to first floor: 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 twin. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet. Low ceilings and beams throughout.

Woodburner in living room (initial fuel included). Gas central heating, electricity and bed linen included. Freeview TV. Video and small library. DVD and small library. Stereo/CD. Electric cooker. Garden furniture. Garage (1 car).

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Lovely cottage with a fascinating history in a beautiful part of the world. All the arrangments worked well and the couple looking after the cottage were very helpful when we found that we had left something behind. June 2012.
  2. Quiet, homely. Aug 2010.
  3. Lovely property, comfortable, cosy and historic. Located in a friendly, quiet location. July 2010.
  4. Cottage exceeded my expectations. Sometimes the photos in the brochure show the rooms larger than fact but in this case the opposite was true. June 2011.
  5. Roomy, comfortable and great atmosphere... lovely to have the open fire which we used every evening. Dec 2009.
  6. The property was a good size and included everything necessary for a short break (might have been limiting for a longer break i.e. no washing M/C). The location was excellent for my needs, a nice quiet village offering a peaceful relaxing environment and ideal easy access for the walks I wanted to do, Cockermouth, Keswick and the Cumrian coast. On the down side there were some minor problems, typical of a cottage and village of this period. Head injuries caused by low door ways and challenging driving and parking due to narrowness of the approach and garage. Amusing watching the refuse wagon/bin men at work. Great for a short break, glad it isn’t my home. Was not impressed with the cleaner turning up before 10-00AM and hassling me 10 minutes later to leave the cottage. Oct 2009.
  7. Very cosy and traditional. Aug 2009.
  8. Full of character and old world charm. Aug 2009.
  9. A very quaint cottage with original features including an original open fire, beamed rooms, and a good base for walks in the lakes. (not a good garden more a back yard encompassing on neighbours property). Aug 2009.
  10. Although the on-line information gave an accurate account of the cottage it didn’t capture the charm and character of the cottage. The peacefulness of both the cottage and the village in which it is situated was so much more than we expected and was at the heart of making it such a wonderful holiday! April 2009.
  11. Excellent base in which to explore this part of the Lake District. The cottage was cosy and relaxing which made unwinding easy to do. Thankyou. Feb 2008.
  12. The cottage was excellent. The info left about the owners, made us feel like we knew them without even meeting them. They called us while we were there and before to let us know about some building work. Excellent, obviously people who love the cottage and want their guests to feel welcome. A washing machine might be good. Aug 2008.
