Property Description

"Idyllic Dorset Cottages with indoor heated pool, sauna and tennis court . . ."

Lying in the picturesque Piddle Valley in West Dorset are the twelve acres of glorious rolling countryside in which these holiday cottages are set. No longer a working farm, Doles Ash Farm now has an established vineyard producing English wines. The splendid range of barns here have been sympathetically converted to form a group of very comfortable cottages, interestingly clustered around a grass courtyard with the owners’ 18th-century house. Facilities include an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, games barn with table tennis, snooker and table football, and tennis court.
Doles Ash Farm is the ideal venue for group get togethers, giving guests the benefit of families and friends being in the same place while still enjoying some personal space in individual cottages. Four of the holiday cottages have enclosed gardens, ideal for dogs, with the remaining four having individual patios. The indoor heated swimming pool is open daily all year round and the building has full changing facilities, as well as a coin-operated sauna. The tennis court is also available all year round. The cottages, facilities and grounds enjoy an outstandingly peaceful setting with magnificent walks on the doorstep. Riding, golf, clay-shooting and fishing are all available locally.
Good shops can be found 8 miles away in Dorchester and 10 miles away in Sherborne. There is a host of local attractions and a long sandy beach within a half hour’s drive at Weymouth. Studland beaches and Swanage are also firm favourites with visitors.
The Piddle Valley is a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which boasts some of the prettiest villages in England and has a wealth of excellent family-friendly pubs to dine and relax in with the village of Godmanstone boasting the smallest pub in England. The beautiful village of Cerne Abbas, overseen by the legendary Cerne Giant, also lies just 3 miles from Doles Ash Farm. This is Thomas Hardy country with many of Hardy’s venues have changed little since his time. At Higher Bockhampton, standing among soaring beech trees, is the thatched cottage where the novelist was born.
Lovely cottages in a fabulous setting, what more could holidaymakers want. Shops 1 mile.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. A simple, comfortable cottage in rolling farmland with an indoor pool and sauna, tennis court and games room all on the doorstep. The cottage had everything we needed and the owners were very welcoming and helpful. We really enjoyed our stay. Groom Cottage is perhaps best booked with Huntsman next door - you can hear the water and boiler from the neighbouring cottage though not people talking. Some of the fittings are slightly worn, but everything works fine. And it didn’t bother us but then I grew up in the country, but it is worth knowing it is surrounded by working farms with the occasional country smell. Oct 2012.
  2. This was a lovely discovery. Stayed in Groom Cottage - the photos on the website did not do it justice! A good base to explore the area. Family holiday with teenagers - great to have the pool. It was a shame it wasn’t open later at night (closed at 6.30pm) to accommodate our two 18 and 16 year olds. But that would be our only suggestion to improve the break. We had a thoroughly great stay and would go back again. July 2012.
  3. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Groom cottage in early June. Everything was just right, comfortable, clean and spacious. The owners were very friendly and helpful and available if required for assistance/advice. Great location for walking or as a base for touring Dorset. We hope to return in the future. June 2012.
  4. Groom Cottage and the facilities made for an exellent family holiday. The cottage was roomy and well equipped. Groom cottage is seperated from the cottage next door by double doors in the lounge so that it can be opened up for larger groups. This meant that the noise levels were probably more evident but did not seem to be a problem. With 4 children ranging in ages from 7 months to 6 years and the weather being so changeable, the fantastic pool, the games room and field meant there was always something for the children to do. The relaxed attitude of the owners and the safe environment were great and we are already booked again for next year. Aug 2011.
  5. Overall Groom Cottage was an excellent property in which to stay. It was in a beautiful location, ideally placed for Dorchester town. The facilities were excellent with the Tennis Court, Swimming pool and the games room. May 2011.
  6. We stayed in Groom Cottage, Doles Ash Farm, in Easter 2011. The farm complex is so well suited to families with young children that ’having to keep an eye on the kids’ is minimised so much that it helps us parents enjoy ourselves too. There are no roads around, there’s lots of open space, the games shed and the little outdoor play area give the kids lots of freedom and little worry. The terrace to the cottage caught the sun until it went down and we were very lucky with the weather. The pool was great as my kids love to swim. We went for a swim each day. We were especially lucky to find our holiday neighbours were a lovely family and we all got on well, parents and kids alike. April 2011.
  7. Comfortable and in a beautiful setting. June 2010.
  8. The whole complex was excellant and we will be returning. Friendly, clean and all of the amenities were very good. May 2010.
  9. Plenty of room for everyone and well equipped. April 2010.
  10. It was just lovely. March 2010.
  11. The property was situated in a lovely area, the rooms were spacious and very comfortable and so was the living area with a cosy wood burner. Definitely return. Feb 2009.
  12. Fantastic for a larger group to have their own space but also come together as a family. Sept 2008.
  13. Fantastic cottage, great for children, beautiful surroundings. Would definately reccommend this cottage to friends and family. May 2008.
  14. Groom Cottage was lovely. It was very clean and there were some lovely finishing and welcoming touches, eg. on arrival there was milk in the fridge, enough tea and coffee for a day, flowers on the table, etc. The swimming pool was also perfect - very clean and warm. July 2008.
  15. Situated in a secluded area, children allowed to run free from cottages to the play facilities without having to accompany them. Swimming pool was of ample size and exactly as the photos show. Lovely quiet, tranquil location. Owners on hand if needed but otherwise go about unnoticed. Would definitely return. July 2007.
  16. Doles Ash farm was the perfect holiday destination - fantastic facilities on site, beautiful surroundings and setting, lovely accommodation, and 2 brilliant foodie pubs in the nearby village. Have recommended to all my friends! March 2007.
  17. A lovely complex with very good accommodation. It was exactly what we were looking for and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Dec 2007.
