Property Description

"Stunning locations in breathtaking scenery..."

In a magnificent setting by the sea, Ardmaddy Castle sits in its own bay with unrivalled views over Seil Sound and the world famous local Slate Islands, designated one of Scotland’s National Scenic Areas. Graded ‘4 Star’ by the Scottish Tourist Board, these four cottages (SBZ, SRW, SRX and SRY) and Caddleton Farmhouse (UNP) are set in secluded, peaceful locations around the estate and offer an ideal base for exploring this stunning part of the West Coast of Scotland.
The castle’s spectacular gardens are open all year round through Scotland’s Gardens Scheme and are a delight for gardening enthusiasts. The area is renowned for its abundant wildlife with porpoise, dolphins, basking sharks, otters, deer, eagles and wealth of seabirds often seen. Sailing, rowing and motor boats are all available for guests to hire, and there is free fishing on Ardmaddy’s stocked hill loch. There is also a central games room with table tennis, darts and a pool table, whilst Caddleton Farmhouse (UNP) and The Stables (SBZ) have their own games room. Guests can also use the castle’s tennis court.
The bustling harbour town of Oban known as the ‘Gateway to the Islands’ is only 12 miles away and has wonderful seafood restaurants, shops and bars. From Oban there are boat trips to the Inner Hebridean Isles, including Mull, Iona, Staffa, Colonsay and Tiree. For the outdoor enthusiast, local activities include horse riding, coasteering, canyoning, canoeing, sailing, diving and golf. Fort William and Glencoe are a short drive away offering very popular climbing and skiing. Explore beautiful gardens and ruined castles in an area rich in historical legacy or take a leisurely walk or cycle along one of the many forest tracks. Visit Bonawe Iron Works, Cruachan Hollow Mountain, the Sealife Centre and Inveraray Jail. Or relax and enjoy the unspoilt natural beauty surrounding the cottages at Ardmaddy. Shops 12 miles, pub/restaurant 2½ miles.

Prepared to Visit Scotland ‘4 Star’ standard, this spacious, single-storey cottage nestles just below the castle and overlooks a grazing field leading to Ardmaddy Bay. Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. We had a wonderful weekend with our family, including our 6 and 9 year old grandchildren. They had so much fun climbing trees, watching the wildlife etc. We thought they might have found it too quiet but when we suggested going into Oban for the day they chose to stay at the cottage. They said it was the ’best’ holiday ever!!! Only thing missing was the sand pit? They has brought buckets and spades but the pit was empty! Oct 2012.
  2. The cottage although seemingly well off the beaten track is only about 8 miles from Oban. We were so lucky with the weather - it was gorgeous all week just one wet morning - the gardener said the area has its own micro climate - which seemed very much the case when we were there. The cottage is more modern than properties we’ve stayed in before - but the log fire cosy furniture and sun lounge made the cottage comfortable and there was lots of space both inside and out to explore. The gardens were terrific with lots of short medium and long walks. The area was totally peaceful absolutely quiet just for the sound of the wildlife. The sea was a very short walk away and the views totally breathtaking - from various point within short distance of the cottage you could see a completely different landscape. My 90 year old mother loved it - access was up 2 steps which she managed with assistance - all other amenities were accessible to her. April 2012.
  3. Beautiful location, excellent facilities and fabulous hosts. We could not have asked for more. Feb 2012.
  4. Comfortable, lovely quiet location, very relaxing. Nov 2011.
  5. The cottage was very well equiped. Ardmaddy Estate is a wonderful place. The views from the cottage are fantastic. Very peaceful, with a lot of good walking from the door. The cottage is very comfortable and the open fire is a treat. Everyone on the estate are very friendly and helpful. Fresh veg from the garden is great and there is a freezer room full of food if you need it. We have been going there for the last five years and its a real delight to get back there. Nov 2010.
  6. Location outstanding. Excellently situated to provide solitude sought but ideally placed also to take advantage of the local amenities/attractions. Oct 2010.
  7. The property was immaculate, clean & tidy. The initial supply of logs was very welcome and the tea and biscuits waiting for us on arrival was a lovely touch. Sept 2010.
  8. Clean, tidy, good attention to detail in equipment and needs of holidaymakers. Aug 2010.
  9. Well equipped kitchen and stunning setting. Aug 2009.
  10. A superb venue for a relaxing away from it all break. The venue encourages walking, cycling and general relaxing whilst providing tennis, table tennis etc for exercise. July 2009.
  11. A well presented cottage - the picture in the brochure does not do it justice - in a fantastic environment. The location is superb and the attention to detail on arrival is very good and welcoming. July 2009.
  12. The scenery is stunning, Ardmaddy castle estate is peaceful with fantastic views to Seil and Luing. The estate people are friendly and very helpful. Could happily have lived there permanently. May 2008.
  13. Fabulous setting, very peaceful. You can buy organic vegetables daily from garden. July 2007.
  14. The complex keeps a range of frozen foods on site available , reducing the need to shop before arrival. You could walk anywhere on the estate with a different walk each day. No need to go beyond the estate if required. Nov 2007.
  15. Excellent home-cooked gourmet freezer meals, good value for money. Aug 2006.
  16. A very comfortable property set within beautiful scenery, and ideal as a base for discovering Scotland. Feb 2006.
