Drive along unfenced roads surrounded by the spectacular scenery of the northern lakes, until you arrive at these cosy character holiday cottages, on a working sheep and beef farm 2.5 miles from Caldbeck. Renovated from an old barn (Swaledale Cottage (ref W1780) is the middle cottage, Ellerbeck Cottage (ref W1821) is the end cottage), they are nicely decorated and furnished and feature exposed beams, with views over farmland to the fells beyond and walking right from the door. In John Peel country, Caldbeck is a pretty and peaceful village which has, in addition to cafes, craft and antique shops, a goldsmith, clogmaker and bowling green. Situated on the edge of the National Park, it is known locally as ’Back o’ Skiddaw’, a walk over which will bring you into the bustling market town of Keswick. Keswick with its lakes, Bassenthwaite and Derwent Water are a 15-minute drive and full of interesting things to see and do. Enjoy a ride up Derwent Water on the Keswick Launch, use the many walking and cycle paths to explore the breathtaking scenery, experience Keswick Spa, the theatre by the lake and the numerous museums suitable for all the family. The traditional market town of Cockermouth, Wordsworth’s birthplace, is 14 miles and the historic city of Carlisle and the Scottish border is 16 miles. This is an excellent base for exploring the northern Lake District. Shops 2.5 miles, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

  1. This is a quaint cottage in a lovely rural setting - ideal if you just want to get away from it all. Whilst it is compact, we found it had everything we needed (and the real fire is most welcome on a chilly night!). The owner - who lives two doors down - is really welcoming and helpful. Within a short driving distance to good pubs/restaurants. June 2012.

  4. From the moment we arrived, we were made to feel very welcome. The cottage was lovely and cosy and had everything we needed. Within 2 minutes walk up the road, we had stunning views. We used to enjoy running downstairs, making a cup of tea and sitting up in bed looking out over the rolling hills of the farm opposite and, if we were awake in time, watching the sun rise - bliss. There was lots of information/leaflets in the cottage which were very useful as it was our first visit to the Lake District, but it won’t be our last! Sept 2011.

The people are friendly and will take time and help you if you get lost. Lovely to hear the sounds of the farm at day and night times. Nothing to complain about a perfect ’ holiday break ’. It was so cosy and true to the brochure. We really enjoyed the holiday and will certainly book again next year. The beds were a dream, we have been to many places and this is the first time the beds were so comfortable. It was lovely to have sheep walking pass your window too. Owner was so accommodating and nothing was any trouble for her. Everything in the cottage was of a high standards and we could not fault it all. Aug 2009.
