Property Description

Heart of Lakeland, with panoramic views
A nature-lovers’ paradise
Wheelchair access in Tarns Cottage

Thompson Ground is a working hill farm in the heart of Lakeland, with panoramic country views. Visitors here will soon find that this wonderful area is filled with a profusion of things to see and pursuits to enjoy, from walking in the beautiful Grizedale Forest and on the Langdales, and going pony trekking, to participating in the water sports and launch trips on nearby Windermere and Coniston Water. However you choose to spend your time, any of these four cosy and comfortable cottages make an ideal holiday base to come back to. The Lake District itself hardly needs any introduction. In addition to the choice natural scenery, amongst some of England’s finest, there are also lots of interesting ‘man-made’ attractions to visit (some more publicised than others). Why not start with the picturesque village of Hawkshead, which is 1/2 mile away. Beatrix Potter’s former home, Hill Top (NT), lies near Sawrey, whilst The Wordsworth Museum in nearby Grasmere, occupies Dove Cottage, which the poet William Wordsworth made his home between 1799 and 1808. There are also many NT properties in the vicinity, from the magnificent Levens Hall to the tiny Old Bridge House at Ambleside. The cottages are attractively furnished and fully equipped, with sealed window units, a storm porch and Tarn Cottage (ref NP57) is specially designed for use by visitors with some degree of physical handicap. Each has their own furnished patio area, and all have access to a front lawn, which is the ideal venue for children and adults to socialise and play. Locally there are plenty of pubs and restaurants, any of which are perfect for spending a relaxing evening in. Stabling for 2 horses is available on request.

Ground floor: Living/dining room/kitchen. First floor: 2 bedrooms: 1 double, 1 single. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet.

Cot. High chair.

All properties: Open fire in living room included. Gas central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. DVD. CD. Electric cooker. Microwave. Washer/dryer. Dishwasher. Payphone (on site). Private patios and furniture. Shared lawned area to front of cottages. Barbecue. Ample parking.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. We have been to most of the cottages on the site at least once a year and have had no issues with any. Oct 2012.
  2. This was our third year running at Cuckoo Brow Cottage, it is in an excellent position for those who enjoy walking. Sept 2011.
  3. A lovely small cosy cottage with wonderful views and easy access to Hawkshead, Ambleside and the South Lakes. Sept 2011.
  4. A lovely welcome. The cottage was clean, warm and cosy. The location was wonderful and gave good access to everywhere we wanted to visit. The village of Hawkshead was delightful, plus Conniston, Ambleside and Windemere. The weather was poor but it did not spoil our week. We did two boat trips which I would recommend. Thank you for a lovely break. May 2011.
  5. Great location, accommodation exactly right for the job. Feb 2011.
  6. Fantastic location! Dec 2010.
  7. Great position. July 2010.
  8. Within a short (20min) walking distance of Hawkshead which had the essential shops needed to survive i.e. the Co-Op. The cottage is in a very good central area for touring the Lake District generally and for walks around three lakes in particular. I would use the cottage (or its neighbor) again when going to the Lake District. June 2010.
  9. Cosy, clean, home from home. It could do with more saucepans/casserole dishes in the kitchen with fitting lids! April 2010.
  10. The property location and view were excellent. The cottage was cosy, clean, warm and well looked after. Jan 2010.
  11. It was an ideal base for exploring the area and the views were wonderful especially with all the snow! There is a nice short walk from the cottage across footpaths to Hawkshead village. Dec 2009.
  12. A beautiful cottage in a lovely location with spectacular views to the mountains. Difficult access in snow/ice and cars had to be abandoned on the farmers field! Not the property owners fault though - bad snow. Dec 2009.
  13. Excellent position for a walking holiday. Nov 2009.
  14. Very clean and cosy, great location surrounded by countryside but within walking distance of Hawkshead village. Oct 2009.
  15. This cottage is one of 4 in a beautiful setting with fantastic views. Very comfortable and ideal for touring the lakes. May 2009.
  16. We picked a very good week weather wise so this was one really big positive. The location was quiet and peaceful and excellently placed for walks and drives. June 2009.
  17. The cottage was clean and nicely furnished and decorated, it was just like being at home. June 2009.
  18. A lovely cottage with spectacular views and good walking from the door. Feb 2008.
  19. A brilliant grandparents’ retreat to the farmhouse. Aug 2008.
  20. Accommodation was very good and the view amazing! Sept 2008.
