Property Description

In the quaint village of Leigh, just south of the picturesque abbey town of Sherborne in north west Dorset, these four converted listed barns are set in an L shape around a courtyard on one side and with lovely country views over Thomas Hardy’s famous Blackmoor Vale on the other. They offer an excellent holiday base to explore north west Dorset and south Somerset. All four are renovated to a high standard with exposed beams, are tastefully furnished, and have use of a communal games room with a snooker table, table football and darts. They can be booked individually or together so are ideal for family get togethers. Though set on the edge of an organic farm (but in a non working part), the owner would be delighted to show guests around the farm, which is only a short walk away from the cottages. There is also a small flock of sheep and chickens in the cider orchard close by. There is superb country walking on the doorstep, a village shop within walking distance, golf nearby, horse riding, and water activities such as fishing, yachting, boating, sailing and canoeing at Halstock Reservoir. Within easy driving one can visit the Yeovilton Fleet Air Arm Museum with its prototype of Concorde, the Haynes Motor Museum with its fascinating selection of vintage motor cars, and Montacute House and Gardens (one of the many historic houses in the area). To the north into south Somerset, spend days exploring Glastonbury with its famous and enchanting Tor, Wells cathedral city and Bishops Palace, the famous Cheddar Gorge and Caves, and the Georgian City of Bath with its delightful Roman baths, Pump Room, museums and of course shops and restaurants. Travel south and the spectacular World Heritage Jurassic Coast and Chesil Beach, with the popular seaside resorts of Lyme Regis, Bridport and Weymouth, all offer many attractions, sights and activities to enjoy, or more locally Sherborne Abbey and Castle (5 miles) and Dorchester market town (12 miles) are not too far. Shop 400 yards, pub 1 mile.

  1. This cottage provides a wonderful relaxing holiday. The cottage itself is clean, comfortable and well equipped. Its location could not be more peaceful, yet it is within easy reach of larger towns for shopping etc. The owners and Estate Manager were extremely helpful, both before and during our break. There are a variety of good establishments for eating, from pubs to more formal restaurants, within easy reach. And the locals are extremely friendly !!! There is no doubt that we will return again to this property. Oct 2012.
  2. A very comfortable base for exploring Dorset and Somerset. June 2012.
  3. Excellent overall accommodation and location. Ideal for dog owners with easy access to fields and footpaths. Outside tap/hose for washing down the dogs after walks would be an advantage, but this was just a minor inconvenience. Would recommend to friends and family and hope to return at a later date. Nov 2011.

He and his 3 year old brother had a brilliant time playing table football and snooker every day. The cottage was great, very comfortable and modern, and the location is perfect for touring round the area, some fantastic beaches, castles, historic houses, quaint villages, cream teas, fossil hunting - a perfect classic British holiday all round! May 2011.
  9. Very pleasant cottage in good location for seeing Dorset. Wonderful view. It was quiet, we were the only people there at the time. It may be different if all the properties are occupied. March 2011.
  10. The Old Creamery is a lovely place to base yourself for exploring Dorset - armed with an OS Dorset Walks book we managed to go walking every day, all within easy reach of the village.
