Property Description

This beautiful country estate offers the perfect ‘home-away-from-home’ in England’s most rural county. Each pretty cottage and private garden is out of sight of any other property. Close to Northumberland’s Heritage coast, these secluded cottages have been renovated throughout to provide cosy interiors with wood-burning stoves - perfect for warm winter breaks.
Farm Cottage boasts its own gin-gang, a circular outbuilding once used as a mule-driven mill. The charming Stable Cottage, draped by a copper beech, was once the coachman’s home. Over the bridge lies Garden Cottage set inside the old walled garden. These three cottages are located in a tranquil pocket of beautiful rolling countryside, under vast skies where the sun rises over beaches and sets onto the moorland of the Cheviots. An ideal country retreat, just 3 miles from sparkling white sandy beaches and close to Northumberland’s magnificent castles. Charlton Hall’s ancient parkland makes for perfect scenic walks. Guests can stroll along the Shippton Burn, which runs under stone bridges, filling the trout lake before meandering to the sea. They can also explore woodland bursting with bluebells and wild flowers in spring and summer; and see nesting buzzards, roe deer, foxes, badgers, hares and weasels – all abundant here due to careful environmental management. A cross country course takes guests who wish to bring their horses through woods and fields. The nearby beaches are also excellent for riding and dog walking.
Additionally, West Lodge is a single-storey cottage nestling behind beautiful stone pillars at the entrance to the estate, screened by mature woodland and handily placed for touring just 100 yards from the single-carriageway A1. Local attractions include Holy Island, the Farne Islands, historic Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnwick Castle and Garden, the Heritage coastline and castles. Newcastle-upon-Tyne and Edinburgh are just 1 hour by train.
Guests arriving by air met at Newcastle Airport (40 minutes by road) by arrangement. Shops 6 miles.

Very spacious double room with 6ft bed and additional 3ft bunk beds (for +2). Bathroom with shower over Jacuzzi bath and toilet. First floor: Double bedroom with 5ft bed and

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. A beautiful, secluded cottage close to Alnwick and the Northumberland beaches. July 2012.
  2. Garden Cottage is a lovely secluded property in a totally peaceful location. There is easy access to the A1 for exploring the area. The owner was very helpful and friendly yet unobtrusive. There was an endless supply of logs for the excellent wood burner. The cottage was well equipped and clean and proved to be just perfect. The coastline in this area is just fantastic with endless clean and often deserted sandy dog friendly beaches. How nice it is to see beaches without a profusion of signs banning various activities. The castles at Bamburgh, Holy Island and Dunstanburgh are also worth visiting. I would thoroughly recommend this property and the area to anybody. At one point we were on a 3 mile stretch of flat sandy beach without a single person in sight, bliss. Oct 2011.
  3. This was our second visit to Garden Cottage, and we’ve already booked it again for next year, so you could say it’s a hit with us(our party comprises 3 adults + pooch)! Its secluded location is absolutely perfect (especially for our dog!), yet the spectacular Northumberland coastline and beaches, and lovely towns such as Alnwick and Rothbury are just a short drive away through stunning countryside. The cottage is one of the best-equipped we have stayed in (although we did have to buy dishwasher tablets - a minor grizzle), and the luxury of having a bathroom each is great! The owner is very welcoming and helpful but does not intrude, and all the local folk we’ve met on our days out have been really friendly, and most of the pubs round and about are dog-friendly too, which is a definite plus. Garden Cottage is a lovely home-from-home to come back to after a day out, to relax and watch the birds in the garden, the deer and horses, and then settle down around a cosy fire - Perfect! Sept 2011.
  4. This was the perfect holiday cottage for our dog - enclosed garden and walks from the door. Northumbria is amazingly dog-friendly. Our dog played on several beaches, went on a boat trip, visited castles and Lindisfarne Priory, went in pubs, a tea room and a large bookshop. July 2011.
  5. Fabulous location for driving to Alnwick, Bamburgh, Cragside, and the coast. Also lovely just to walk out of the door into lovely countryside, will explore more of the footpaths next time. The house was well equipped and really cosy. Bedrooms all good size and plenty of bathrooms. We loved it! July 2011.
  6. Very homely and quiet with an enclosed garden for the dogs. Oct 2010.
  7. A superb, secluded cottage on a lovely estate. Very well equipped and of a high standard. Sept 2010.
  8. Lots to do in the area. The property was comfortable and well equipped (better than most). The kids loved the tennis court, rowing boat on the lake and the table tennis table. For older teenagers it kept them very well entertained. Absolute perfection for the kids would be internet access and a better selection of dvd’s to watch but we were very pleased with it all. The grounds and country walks around the cottage were wonderful. July 2010.
  9. Garden Cottage had everything in it we could have possibly required. When the heating oil ran out the owner supplies 3 heaters very quickly and we took advantage of the large wood burning fire in the living room so we were not inconvenienced for the 14 hours without the heating. The position of the cottage was a joy particularly in the morning watching two horses grazing in the morning sunshine. The tranquility suited our needs. April 2010.
  10. Seclusion and surroundings - plenty of walks, roe deer visiting the walled garden, birds, etc. Feb 2010.
  11. It has everything you want for a relaxing cottage holiday and its a great base to see the surrounding areas. Aug 2009.
  12. The cottage and whole estate were delightful the holiday exceeded our expectations by far. A big thank you to the family who own the cottage. Feb 2009.
  13. Location and accommodation were excellent; great for cyclists; lovely beaches close by; good food available locally. April 2008.
  14. The Northumberland weather did not detract from a thoroughly enjoyable holiday. Our extended family and two dogs had a fantastic time, there is so much to see and do that we did not have enough time in a week to cover everything. The cottage was very comfortable and we were all (including the dogs) made very welcome by the owners. I would recommend this holiday whole-heartedly. Aug 2008.
  15. Wonderful, homely cottage. Being surrounded by such lovely countryside was a dream, but being able to walk the fields and woods freely was fantastic. March 2008.
  16. Fantastic surroundings to a cosy and well presented cottage. The owner welcomed us personally and made us feel very welcome and free to make the most of the beautiful surroundings. Oct 2008.
  17. The location of the cottage was wonderful and romantic with its cosy furnishings and deliciously comfortable beds, just off the beaten track on an country farm / estate. There was plenty of wildlife and a plethora of places of interest to visit, even in October!!. We would highly recommend Gardeners Cottage and would definitely stay there again. Nov 2007.
  18. The property was fantastic and even better than we’d hoped it would be. The setting was beautiful and the outside space was brilliant for our children to explore. April 2007.
  19. We have booked through your company on several occasions and we will continue to do so. The property was great, the owner very helpful and the weekend break very enjoyable. June 2006.
