Property Description

Steeped in history, Ben Venue is an imposing listed Victorian house built in 1890, once owned by the brother of A.R Johnson wax polish empire of America. Ben Venue (HKKB) is attached to Lemon Tree Cottage (HMMS) and the owner’s apartment. In Ben Venue (HKKB), many original features are still evident, with a very grand staircase, and large chandeliers throughout as well as high ceilings which add to the charm and character of this most beautiful property. It is decorated and furnished to a very high standard, from the piano in the entrance to the four-poster beds, the large bathroom and en-suite shower rooms. There have been many famous celebrities who have visited the property over the years and enjoyed many a game of snooker on the full size snooker table - see all the photos adorning the walls including Ray Reardon, Max Bygraves and Bobby Davro to name but a few. All of the rooms have elegance about them; there are huge picture windows, and sea views from the ground and first floors. Lemon Tree Cottage has its own entrance and is also decorated to a high standard from Italian marble floors to beautiful furnishings. Torquay has so much to offer and these are the perfect properties for family get-togethers, friends reunited and celebrations. There are 22 miles of coastline, cliffs, coves, beaches and walks, with opportunities for surfing, swimming, diving, sailing, angling and to study the natural wildlife at leisure. Stunning views are to be seen just about everywhere across the bay, out over the English Channel, along the 40 miles of Lyme Bay to Portland Bill or inland towards the tors of Dartmoor. Torquay is an ideal base from which to visit Dartmouth, Totnes, Exeter and Plymouth. It is a place to relax, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a holiday in a classic English seaside resort. Torquay town centre and Living Coasts are about 5 minutes away. Shops and pub ¼ mile.

Customer Comments

Selected comment(s) from customers who have enjoyed staying at this property:
  1. Beautiful house, big enough for us all 11 of us and 3 dogs to be together or have our own space, would highly recommend this property to any large group, the house is more beautiful in reality than in the pictures. April 2012.
  2. Great place, very nice to be able to take our puppies and very nice owner. Aug 2011.
  3. The house was magnificent. Plenty of room for our large family reunion. Large eat-in kitchen was great for all of us to cook and eat together informally. Large living room and porch also great. Snooker table was especially a big hit. All-in-all the house and setting were perfect. July 2011.
  4. A group of friends (5 couples) stayed in February. There was plenty of room to be together or apart, we all had our own bathrooms. It was romantic and relaxing break. A very beautiful old house, that was warm and inviting. Feb 2011.
  5. Superior accomodation, fantastically equiped and extremely welcoming. Dec 2010.
  6. So much space - perfect for our large family group ranging in age from 1 to 70+. The piano, the courtyard and the snooker kept us all entertained. Oct 2010.
  7. Ben Venue is beautiful, clean, fresh and brimming with unique character. Although it is an extremely large house, it still maintains a wonderfully warm and homely atmosphere. Myself and my family had a wonderful long weekend there, which will stay in our memories forever... We would love to return one day... Oct 2010.
  8. Lovely, large, well furnished and equipped house which had everything we needed. Very good arrangement with the bedrooms being split on opposite sides of the house, for privacy, so would very much suit a large family group. Full sized snooker table in good order which was much appreciated by the male members of our party! July 2010.
  9. A great house for large family group. July 2010.
  10. Exactly as advertised on the website. Very grand, plenty of facilities, good value for money. The owner has maintained the excellent history of the house. Hours can be spent in the snooker room reading the books and photo’s before you even start a game. Your group will feel very special in this property. June 2010.
  11. Beautiful house, and warm despite the very cold temperatures outside. Ideal for a party. Plenty big enough for our group size (10 plus two children). Snooker room with full size table went down very well with the males! Enclosed courtyard garden ideal to be able to let dog out without fear of escape. The division of the upstairs area was ideal, as allowed those without children to use the 3 bedrooms on the opposite side of house to the children. It would have been useful to have a little more information left about nearest supermarkets, as we had to fight with Sat Nav to locate the Waitrose / Sainsburys nearby. Dec 2009.
  12. Fantastic - the photos on the website are great, so we all had very high expectations which were duly matched by the magnificence of the property. The owner was friendly, welcoming and helped us out with the few queries we had during our stay. I would have absolutely no hesitation in recommending Ben Venue to my friends. Sept 2009.
  13. Being Torquay, the house was at the top of quite steep hills but there was a bus that stopped right outside the door and taxis were easily available and quite reasonable in price. Very large house, we had 10 in party and there was plenty room to sit and read alone, but there were large rooms so we could all get together to eat, play games or just relax. July 2009.
  14. A fabulous location and a beautifull house which exceeded all of our expectations, the perfect location for a family holiday. June 2009.
  15. A lovely big house with plenty of space for a family get together. Aug 2009.
