These two holiday properties stand near to each other in their own grounds, each with their own garden, and enjoy a convenient setting close to the heart of the delightful small market town of Ballater with good shops, hotels, restaurants and golf course near at hand. An excellent centre from which to discover the many places of interest nearby; Ballater itself is a lovely base with many links to the Royal family and historic castles nearby include Balmoral, Crathies and Craigievar. The Hunting Lodge is an Austrian chalet set in its own grounds in green managed woods and large open spaces, accessed by a rough track, this property provides peace and privacy yet is close to all amenities, and the excellent grocer in Kingussie will deliver. True to its name, The Hunting Lodge offers fishing and rough shooting by arrangement, and is also well placed for accessing all areas of one of the best-served holiday areas in Scotland. Located within the Cairngorm National Park, Kingussie has links with the TV drama series Monarch of the Glen, which was broadcast by the BBC and was set in the area. The Ardverikie Estate, where Monarch of the Glen was filmed, is about 12 miles from Kingussie and was also a location for the movies Mrs Brown and The Missionary. Notable attractions for visitors to the area include The Highland Wildlife Park where Scottish wildlife can be experienced in the setting of the Scottish Highlands; there is a safari section as well as the more usual walk-around area. A variety of animals found in Scotland today can be seen there, as well as those from mountainous regions all over the world. Another tourist attraction found locally are the ruins of the early 18th century Ruthven Barracks which were built on the site of Ruthven Castle near the original site of the village - the flood plain of the River Spey caused the village to be relocated to its present day site. Just 3 miles away is the The Highland Folk Museum, which was the first British mainland open air museum. Visitors can enjoy learning about Highland life going back to the 1700s in a living history environment with the backdrop of a wonderful natural setting where red squirrels can also be observed.
